The Witcher’s first trailer is here, and its everything fans were hoping for

Get your first look at Geralt of Rivia in action.

Today is a very special day for Witcher fans. We’ve been patiently awaiting our first look at Geralt of Rivia swinging his sword in live-action since the series was first announced in May of 2017, and today that wait has ended. The first trailer for Netflix’s The Witcher series is here.

We got our first look at Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia — the legendary monster hunter — on Halloween last year. Since then Henry Cavill hasn’t given fans much to look at. That changed earlier this month when the series lead revealed pictures of the cast and his trusty steed Roach on his Instagram account. It was the post with Roach that heavily hinted that a trailer Witcher content was coming at San Diego Comic Con, and Mr. Cavill delivered on that mega tease.

The Witcher series is is based on the best-selling fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and takes place 20 years before the popular video game series. It first began as a series of short stories published in Polish, which have since been translated to numerous languages, including English. The latest novel Season of Storms, was released in the US in March of 2018.

Series showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich has previously noted that the series will be heavily based on the books, and focus less on the wildly popular video games series from CD Projekt Red. Today’s trailer backs up Hissrich’s claims, as the there are multiple elements from many of the books present.

Quite simply, the trailer is awesome. Just awesome. Any die-hard Witcher fan will have their eyes searching for key elements of the stories and they’ll be pleased to find that Ciri and Yennefer’s origins are tied to the main plot. Specifically, Ciri’s flee from a conquered Cintra, and Yennefer’s battle against her physical deformities and the dangers of becoming a sorceress. And don’t worry, our man Geralt is using Witcher signs and elixirs, swinging a silver chain at a monstrous Striga, and kicking all kinds of ass.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold.

No official release date is available at this time, but the series is expected for late 2019.
