SDCC 2019: John Romita Jr. talks ‘Superman: Year One’ and working with Frank Miller

Superman: Year One #2 is going to feature love in many forms.

John Romita Jr. said Frank Miller sounded like a kid in a candy store, which made him even more excited to work on Superman: Year One when he pitched him the idea. “Frank likes splitting everything apart,” Romita Jr. said, which has made Superman so interesting since it’s examining his entire life. It’s revealed Superman will be visiting Atlantis in the second issue and Romita Jr. said he’ll be falling in love…again. Superman will also be falling in love with the human race, so to speak.

This was all said at the “Building the Future of Super Heroes with DC Black Label” panel on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con.  Moderated by executive editor for DC Black Label Mark Doyle, the panel had guests Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, John Romita Jr., Kami Garcia, and Jeff Lemire.

The plot is so deep that Romita Jr. talked a bit about how he could have drawn so many more pages and he was asked to scale it back. “I feel like I’m working on a film,” Romita Jr. said.

Superman: Year One #2 comes out August 21st.
