4 big takeaways from Marvel Comics’ October 2019 solicitations

Rise of Skywalker, Doctor Doom, Spidey faces Red Goblin, and more!

Every month comic book publishers release their solicitations, telling fans and comic shops what sort of stories they’ll be reading in three months time. It’s exciting to get a look at the future and it’s a fun way to guess at what’s to come. Marvel Comics has released their October solicitations today and it’s filled with cool art and reveals.

That said, a lot of the reveals have already come out thanks to Marvel’s PR team releasing teases in the last few weeks, from their Dawn of X reveals, to the fact that Spider-Verse is getting its own series written by Jed MacKay, to Mary Jane getting a new series too. Outside of those, though, here are my four takeaways from the latest batch.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

1) Marvel Zombies aren’t the only virus-related enemy in October

Marvel has already announced a Marvel Zombies return from Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Leonard Kirk, but what about Contagion, a new five-part series from Ed Brisson and Roge Antonio, Stephan Segovia, and Mack Chater? The solicits reveal plenty of details via the art with seven covers showing off some rather gross looking mushroom/pustule covered heroes. It’s right in time for Halloween, so we’ll all be ready for a little more gore in our lives, and it’ll be interesting to find out how this contagion was released and who will make it out alive.

2) Red Goblin is back!

Not seen since Spider-Man beat Norman Osborn into submission in Dan Slott’s final run on Amazing Spider-Man, Red Goblin is an interesting one-shot. It’s not only partly written by the newly-exclusive Marvel artist Pat Gleason, but it’s also drawn by the excellent Pete Woods. It appears Red Goblin is popping up in Amazing Spider-Man too, so likely Marvel and its creators decided they needed a special one-shot to fit in all the Red Goblin madness. He’s also perfect for Halloween.

3) General Leia and Rey must join forces with…the Mon Calamari!

It looks like we’ll be getting the first four issues (or maybe that’s all the issues?) of Ethan Sacks and Luke Ross’ Rise of Skywalker tie-in comics in October. Good timing, since the movie will only be a couple months away. It’s also worth noting this story involves Leia and Rey teaming up, so it’ll be nice to see a “lost” adventure between them. Also, who doesn’t love the Mon Calamari?

BEFORE THE EXCITING EVENTS OF

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER!

Hounded by the FIRST ORDER across the galaxy, the RESISTANCE is in dire need of ships, weapons and recruits to make a final stand against KYLO REN’S forces. Desperation drives a delegation led by GENERAL LEIA ORGANA and REY to entreat the Rebel veteran’s one-time allies, THE MON CALAMARI, to join the fight — but decades after Imperial occupation enslaved their planet, there are those willing to stop at nothing to prevent another war from bloodying the waters of Mon Cala. A system away, POE DAMERON and FINN have their own mission: to hunt down a weapons cache on the remote moon of Avedot, unaware that they are being hunted by the most notorious criminal gang in the galaxy.

4) The greatest Marvel villain ever, Doctor Doom, gets a new series

Now, this is a nice surprise. Christopher Cantwell and Salvador Larroca are working on a Doctor Doom story that is an ongoing (buy lots of these folks, so we can get more!). This is a character that needs a lot of love after Brian Michael Bendis turned him into a hero of sorts and then hastily turned him back into a villain way too quickly. It looks like the creative team is thrusting Doom into an unlikely position of having no allies or country to rely on. Can Doom survive? I can’t wait to find out.

THE CRACK OF DOOM!

From Christopher Cantwell (HALT AND CATCH FIRE, SHE COULD FLY) comes a new monthly ongoing series…

Victor Von Doom – scientist, sorcerer, disfigured face, twisted soul – has been spending much of his time warning against a trillion-dollar global effort to create the first “artificial” black hole. Wrestling with visions of an entirely different life…a better future…DOCTOR DOOM finds himself at a crossroads. (what is he questioning?)

A catastrophic act of terrorism kills thousands, and the prime suspect is… DOOM? Victor will have to push his unexplained thoughts aside and focus on remaining alive as the title of “Most Wanted Man” is thrust upon him….

Left with no homeland, no armies, no allies, indeed, nothing at all, will the reign of Doctor Doom come to an abrupt halt?
