Daredevil #12 Review

You can take the man off the streets, but you can’t take the streets out of the man.

Each issue of this arc has been a part of a bigger story, so even though we are in an arc called “Through Hell,” this is the continuation of the story established in issue #1 of Chip Zdarsky’s run and it is a hell of a ride.  The current issue will focus on Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk and what they are trying to become: better men.  Let us take a look at this issue, SPOILERS included.

At the start of the issue we see Matt call in some favors to help save someone else — the “Daredevil” from the last issue is held up and beaten by some rogue cops and Foggy comes in to scare them away as lawyer Michael Nelson.  I wonder if Foggy calling himself Michael is a nod to Matt doing the same thing with his wild “twin brother?”  Matt’s plan was pretty good until Foggy started to comply with the cops…so it was a good effort on Matt’s part to stay away from being Daredevil.

Yet Matt was in his makeshift costume, so I’m betting some part of him was hoping things would go south and he could spring into action.  From Chip’s words into Matt’s thoughts you can see a tormented man who wants to do the right thing but knows that he can’t stop himself from crossing the line and going into violence.  Luckily for Matt, Elektra steps in to help. Matt is stuck holding “Daredevil” from falling to his death and Elektra steps in to take down the cops and does it in a way that Matt would approve of.  This will be an interesting setup for the future as Matt does decide to take Elekra on as a teacher so he can be better than he was.

On the other side of this story we see Wilson Fisk going to a wealthy CEO’s home for a shared meal with the “cleaner” side of business.  One of the guests just keeps jabbing at Fisk and you almost feel for him, since he is trying to go legit with his business dealings.  The sad part is that these “clean” business people are just as bad as the street crime that Fisk used to be a part of, as they talk of purchasing a government in order to get overseas business done to their standards for profit.  Again that one guest just can’t let go of Fisk’s past and keeps poking the bear, at which point Fisk excuses himself from the table.  This gives the guest a moment to stand one on one with Fisk and he keeps mocking him to the point where Fisk grabs him and takes him down fatally in the bathroom. At first I thought this was one of those tricks of the mind to relieve stress, but this looks real…so how will Fisk get out of this one?

This is another great issue from the creative team of Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto as they continue this arc and series with thrills and spectacular imagery.  Marco’s art, as always, is just a treat and he does so well with his fight scenes.  The way Marco has Matt taking on the cops is just great and you can see the moves go from panel to panel. Chip just has a way with his characters and he puts so much into them.  I felt so sorry for Matt during the fight as he was trying his hardest not to give into violence, but that is what he knows. It’s going to be interesting to see how Chip gets Fisk out of this latest predicament. A broad daylight murder of a wealthy socialite at a dinner party — as if I wasn’t going to buy the next issue, this guarantees it for me.

Is it good?
Amazing issue! Chip and Marco really tighten the screws to Murdock and Fisk as they try to be different than what their nature shows. This issue tests the mettle of these two men; definitely read this on new comic book day!
The situations that Murdock and Fisk find themselves in really tests their new images
Chip Zdarsky is crafting a tale that will take the characters through their own hells and is a worthwhile read
Marco Checchetto brings some killer art in this issue when it comes to the fights and the aftermath
