NYCC ’19: BOOM! Studios panel announces new series ‘Alienated’, WWE: New Day Graphic Novel, and more

“What if E.T. was found by a trio of quite troubled teenagers?”

BOOM! Studios may not be the biggest indie comics outfit, but maybe they should be with such a fantastic pool of creatives. Nowhere was this more evident than during their “Find Yours” panel where a new title was announced Friday, October 4th 2019.

Alienated is written by Simon Spurrier with art by Chris Wildgoose. Spurrier pitched it as a twisted version of E.T., “but what if E.T. was found by a trio of quite troubled teenagers? What if E.T. wasn’t a kind-of brown turd guy?” Instead of being a cuddly story, it’s about the teenagers using the powerful alien to kill a bully (which brought on gasps from the audience). A surprise appearance came from Chris Wildgoose joining the panel briefly. It will be released in February of 2020.

Via video, the WWE group New Day talked about their new 2020 project coming out: WWE: New Day Graphic Novel. It’s written by Austen Walker with art by Evan Narcisse and Daniel Bayliss. Austen Walker made an appearance to talk about the group’s rise to fame and how they’re special because they powered through adversity and “they brought their love of nerd culture…”

Before that, the rest of the panelists were asked about their own current series. James Tynion IV spoke about his hit series, Something’s Killing the Children. “Originally I saw it as a series of one shots.” However, he then realized the town and characters “needed more room.” When asked if he had enough material for long term plans, Tynion IV chuckled and coyly said, “I definitely have lots of ideas.” He even addressed a question from a person dressed as his creation, Erica Slaughter.

Gaby Dunn, a television writer, said her transition to graphic novels has been very enjoyable. “As a writer you should be able to work in any medium.” Her graphic novel, Bury the Lead mostly involves women instead of many noir/mysteries that are focused on white males. She’s drawn from personal experience for her BOOM! book since she was a 15-year old crime journalist.

Lev Grossman said the reception to adapting his novels into comics has been quite enjoyable. Best of all, he’s grabbed lots of literary fiction readers and brought them to genre fiction. Exclusive artwork for The Magicians comics was revealed.

We were also given the opportunity to see some stunning art from Royal Dunlap’s new comic series b.b. free.

Overall, BOOM! Studios’ enthusiasm emanated not only from the panelists but also the audience. BOOM! Studios’ ethos is to bring a variety of comics to all people and that passion for the medium is incredibly infectious.
