Judging by the Cover – 2/27/19 new releases

Dave and Eric share their favorite covers from this week’s new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in. A fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Media & Content Manager David Brooke and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

Dave’s Picks:

Bone Parish #7
Cover art by Jakub Rebelka

BOOM! Studios

What a cute family portrait. Not! The blood dripping from this oddly shaped skull is gorgeous and the fact that it hangs in outer space is quite cool too. There’s so much to view vertically I can’t help but linger for longer than I would on an average comic book cover.

Fantastic Four #7
Cover art by Bill Sienkiewicz

Marvel Comics

I love this point of view because it catches you off guard. The face is so well-rendered compared to his more basic body and hands. It’s eerie how we see him through the fingers and it highlights so well how overly strange superheroes can be.

Barbarella Vol. 2: Hard Labor
Covert art by Marco D’Alfonso

Dynamite Comics

I love how she’s sitting on a detailed asteroid with planets floating about her. The space scene is so retro and disco it’s hard to deny how cool it is while the rendering of her, and the powerful pose, is hard to deny too. The use of smoke allows for some subtlety that covers up her leather suit, helping to make this less exploitative and more cool.

Eric’s Picks:

Redlands #11
Cover art by Vanesa R. Del Rey

Judging by the Cover - 2/27/19 new releases

Image Comics

I love this shot of the flaming skeleton descending (or ascending?) in the middle of nowhere. The painting is just beautiful, with lovely colors that play off of each other well. I dig how Del Rey effectively conveys nighttime without relying too much on black or making the content overly opaque. All in all, this is a nice combination of landscape imagery with a much less natural figure literally floating in the foreground.

X-Force #3
Cover art by Pepe Larraz

Judging by the Cover - 2/27/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

I dig the action here, with the X-Force members free-falling in the literal face of danger. All the tiny details in the line-work are nice, and the contrast between that intricacy and the simplicity of the bold red background is great. Cool work all around.

Black Panther #9
Cover art by Daniel Acuna

Judging by the Cover - 2/27/19 new releases

Marvel Comics

All I can say is “badass.” This bold take on the classic Jaws poster with an even more terrifying creature than the original shark is awesome.  The combination of the blacks and blues looks great, with just the murderous red of the monster’s eye interrupting them.
