Tom Taylor and Iban Coello’s highly anticipated series Dark Ages is here, and boy is it a game-changer. A typical day with pizza, family, and friends turns to excruciating pain for Peter Parker when his spider-sense begins to go haywire. However, Peter’s not the only hero feeling the effects of this emerging energy. Other spider-people like Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, alongside X-Men Professor X and Jean Grey, can detect it too. Whoever this mysterious power is also has the attention of Apocalypse, who seems rather excited for what comes next.
You know things are bad as a hero when you don’t even have time to scarf down a slice of pizza without the fate of the world hanging in the balance, but I digress. A hero’s work is never done in Dark Ages #1. Spider-Man narrates a story that seems like some of its events have already taken place.
Though I can’t tell you much without spoiling anything, I will suggest that you don’t get too attached, as there are some casualties in this issue. Expect the unexpected, as well. The first issue runs the gamut, featuring a host of Marvel favorites, including the Fantastic Four and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
Dark Ages #1 looks to expand the Marvel Universe into territories that will forever change the way we see it, and I’m fully invested. It’ll be interesting to see where this journey takes our beloved heroes and villains, and the new alliances it may create. After reading this book, you can ask yourself: where were you when the lights went out?
