Godzilla in Hell #3 Review

Godzilla takes a third trip through the underworld, this time courtesy of Ulises Farinas (co-writer), Erick Freitas (co-writer), and Buster Moody (art). Is it good?

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Godzilla and Space Godzilla are throwing down in Brazil right next to the famous Christ the Redeemer statue. Asteroids are falling all around them. The fisticuffs end up going nuclear and blowing up the planet…

…which of course sends poor Big G on an express elevator to Hades. It also sends Space Godzilla there. Making things even more crowded are the foot soldiers of both Heaven and Hell vying for their allegiance.

Much ass is kicked.

SYMBOLISM!

Is It Good?

I almost feel like this issue suffers a bit due to how incredible the first two were. It’s not bad at all—the art is good and the story is pretty cool. I especially like the metaphorical middle finger Godzilla gives to both ethereal armies at the end.

But it just doesn’t quite reach the same incredible heights that the previous chapters achieved. Perhaps it was due to the limited dialogue (spoken by the soldiers), which is a big (and somewhat jarring) addition to the series’ established narrative. Also, the fight between Godzilla and Space Godzilla feels a little pedestrian… which is a sentence that I never thought I’d type.

But after so many epic clashes before it, this one left me feeling a little deflated. It’s still fun (especially when it takes a turn for the bizarre/grotesque), but comparatively reigned in—or maybe even tame.

Godzilla in Hell #3 is still a good issue, though. Just not a masterpiece like the series has pulled off (twice in row) before.
