Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen #2 Review

I was never a big Lara Croft/Tomb Raider guy.

I didn’t have a Playstation when she was tearing up the charts, and by the time the movies came out, I was wading through Elites and Flood in Halo CE on Xbox.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Still, when the reboot Tomb Raider, came out, I dove in and devoured the game in the span of a week. It helped that they upgraded the usual cheesecake/short shorts Lara with a more, archaeology first, reluctant badass second. She felt real, got hurt, was scared, and still managed to take out people threatening to kill her.

Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen #2 (Dark Horse Comics)

This new Tomb Raider series, Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen seems to backtrack a bit to sexy Lara, instead of bad mamajama Lara. Compare:

Oh…right..the over the shoulder butt shot…*sigh*

Oh look! A competent looking badass!

Enough about sex appeal, is it any good?

Is It Good?

Well…it’s not bad?

Overall Lara Croft and the Frozen Omen #2 avoids the glacial-like pacing of issue 1, and ramps up the mystery and the supernatural aspects quite nicely. The Indiana Jones-esque global travel, weird beasties, and ancient artifacts are all pretty standard beats, but they seem to work OK here.

The artwork is solid, nothing too flashy, but decent:

Skull Diving: Baja California’s new EXTREME sport.

For me, it’s just missing that spark.

It really wants to be an Indiana Jones movie, but the draw for those was Indy’s complicated backstory of hinted at adventures and personal relationships. This falls a bit flat — with Lara running around the world to get to the bottom of a mystery that doesn’t feel all that importan, and without telling us her real motivation.

I’ll give it a 5 out of 10. It might be that the arc picks up, and by the end I’ll be eating my words, but this slow start feels like a drag.
