Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude #1 Review

In anticipation of the Spider-Man film franchise’s third reboot, Marvel has released the first of a two part prelude to this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

To be fair, everything we’ve seen and heard about the upcoming movie looks fantastic. Will the prequel comic be, as well?

Observations

  • Awesome! Spider-Man swinging around and fighting crime in his homemade suit! This is exactly what I was hoping to see!
  • Wait…I’ve seen this part already…
  • I’ve seen this already, too…
  • Finally! A page of new material!
  • And we’re back to stuff we’ve already seen…
  • …and even more recycled material…
  • ….zzzzz…..zzzzz….

The Verdict

No.

No, no, no.

Look, I get that making a movie prequel/prelude comic isn’t easy. You can’t spoil too much about the upcoming film, but still have to craft a story that ties into things enough to be at least somewhat interesting. On that last part, Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude fails completely.

Aside from three pages, the comic is a word-for-word, shot-for-shot adaption of Captain America: Civil War…which was a great movie! But not great enough for Marvel to charge $4 for what amounts to a graphic novel clip show.

I guess there could be folks out there who didn’t see Civil War and still plan to buy a ticket to Homecoming, but this comic certainly won’t be any help getting them up to speed. The scenes and characters referenced throughout are clearly presented in the context of someone familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So who the heck is this $4, standard-length comic being made for?

Definitely not me. The only thing positive I can find to say about the issue is that it was competently put together and the art looks nice. Otherwise, it’s worthless to hardcore and casual Marvel fans alike.

Let’s hope the second issue of this series has some more new and/or interesting things to offer. Otherwise, it could make my rating for this one look generous.
