Web Warriors #1 Review

The question comes up in this new series on why there needs to be superhero teams at all. There are two answers. It’s an interesting take, but is it good?

Web Warriors #1 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

After Spider-Verse and now Secret Wars one had to wonder what the deal with the “great web” and the many dimensions of Spider characters was. One might figure Dr. Doom did away with all that, but apparently you’d be wrong. This series focuses on a bunch of the Spider characters and their dimension jumping to rid the universes of Green Goblin.

Why does this comic book matter?

Spider-Verse was an exciting story and I don’t think Spider-Man has ever had such a complicated storyline. Each character is of course coming in with their own baggage so it’s rife with reasons for a team book!

Action shot!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

As I said in the intro, writer Mike Costa does a great job exploring why teams work together. Some of the characters even question the need to have a super team, but are promptly shown why a team is necessary. Costa introduces some new villains that are a nice foil to the Web Warriors and he does a good job setting up a cliffhanger that’ll make you want to come back for more.

Spider Gwen fans should definitely purchase this one as she takes center stage with the most scenes. The issue gives nearly every character some time to shine too, or at least some character development. The only character lacking is Anya, who gets a brief appearance and one short line. The rest get enough time for new readers to understand their place on the team.

The thing everyone will be talking about is the opening action sequence. It is set in Earth 3015 and it’s the cartoon Spider-Man universe. It’s a lot of fun for a variety of reasons, from the look to the hilariously easy way the Warriors can take them out. It’s light and fun and shows how this series is full of surprises.

The art by David Baldeon is nice and detailed. There’s a lot going on in these pages and while it feels a bit claustrophobic it’s fluffy and fun. The character designs are also logical and varied when it comes to the newer characters. I’m also glad the female characters aren’t overly sexualized.

It can’t be perfect, can it?

The only issue is the claustrophobic art which sometimes can feel stuffy and sluggish.

Haha!

Is It Good?

This is a fun issue with surprises and strong characters that will most assuredly lead to great drama and a foe that makes a lot of sense.
