19 men have been killed after the events of Wonder Woman #1, and now U.S. relations with the Amazons have gone from tense to violent. Amazons are being deported, and Wonder Woman is their primary target. The first issue came out swinging, and in the second issue, it’s all about Wonder Woman versus those who oppose her.
If the first issue was robust with scene changes and reveals, the second issue is far more singular. It features Wonder Woman facing off against the U.S. Army in the present intercut with Wonder Woman facing off against an adversary in Themyscira when she was much younger. It seems writer Tom King is trying to show Wonder Woman never gives in or surrenders. It’s not part of her DNA.
If there were similarities to both battles in this issue, it’s that Wonder Woman doesn’t balk in the face of terrible odds. In the present, she faces tanks, bombs, and soldiers. In the past, a warrior Amazon likely had far more experience. By the end of the issue, it’s pretty clear that Wonder Woman isn’t entering battles due to ignorance or stubbornness but because she has unparalleled confidence.
Time to fight.

Story-wise, this entire issue leads to a reveal. I honestly didn’t see it coming, and it helps contextualize the first issue and the threat to the Amazons in a compelling way. Steve Trevor is also present, adding an emotional toll on Wonder Woman, who is incredibly physical as she takes on a literal army. One could argue outside of the incredible fighting abilities on display, there isn’t a lot of plot progression. The reveal is surprising enough to up the ante, though.
Artist Daniel Sampere makes you believe Wonder Woman can lasso missiles out of her way, block machine gun fire with her bracelets, and swing tanks as if they were axes. There is a lot of attention to fighting form and movement that Sampere gets spot on. Expressions go a long way to make Wonder Woman brave but also fearless. Something about her eyes screams, “Bring it on.”
Also contained here is a backup by Josie Campbell and Vasco Georgiev setting up Amazons Attack. It opens with an Amazon attacking a gas station in Canada, although it’s unclear if it’s intentional. Key Amazons pop into the story, revealing a prophecy that clues where things are going. Something is very wrong, and it’ll be fun to unpack who or what is attacking the Amazons.
Wonder Woman #2 slows down a bit to reveal how brave and confident Wonder Woman is when entering battle. Not only that, we get to see her abilities pushed to the max as she faces a literal army. Wonder Woman hits with ferocity and intensity, unlike any other superhero comic.
