Horror Comics Breakdown: 10/26/2012 – Dark Horse Delight

Welcome to the inaugural breakdown about mein favorite kind of comics. Those would be horror comics, in case you didn’t read the big bold text above this part known to the layman as a “title.” I hate to get labeled as that creepy kid (I prefer to label myself with Spooky because Dread Central already had a guy with the “Creepy” moniker) but durnit, I know what I like. I like brilliantly deranged art and terrifying plots. And the following comics deliver those in spades.

Creepy #10

Horror Comics Breakdown: 10/26/2012 - Dark Horse Delight

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

I decided it would be nice to pick comics everyone could sink their teeth into, without having to Google what the Hell was happening with the plot. So, all of these are the first issue, or like this issue of Creepy, an anthology type that didn’t have a story arc.

This issue is Lovecraft themed. It’s five bucks, but also fifty pages… and did I mention it’s themed around the work of the guy who is responsible for all the tentacles in horror? The pages are all in black and white, so it has an old school vibe to it.

This one has an ass ton of writers and artists involved, like John Arcudi, and writers Kelley Jones and Richard Corben. Rest I’d never heard of, but all of the stories are engaging.

And right off the bat… I’m sorry, it appears that the first Lovecraft tale The Lurking Fate that Came to Lovecraft written by Doug Moench with art by Kelley Jones is the third part in a three part series. My b. Whatever, I think the important thing, is Lovecraft has summoned one of his elder gods, and now he’s screwed.

All the tales are great, the art is fantastic and would do Lovecraft proud. Pick it up if you want a good Lovecraft themed comic antho.

Exsanguine #1

Horror Comics Breakdown: 10/26/2012 - Dark Horse Delight

What do you get when a bored vampire follows a serial killer? Why Ex Sanguine of course! Written by Joshua Scott Emmons and Tim Seeley with art by Tim Seeley, in this first issue we get to meet The Hollow Man, and two FBI agents, one with red hair (cough Scully cough) and some other dude with goatee. Do they even let that shit fly in the F.B.I.? It reads fast. It’s intriguing. A little bit of blood spilled, but nothing overly gruesome yet, save for writing in blood, which is old hat. Little bit of a Jack the Ripper homage, I guess.

Little bit of a twist with who the killer turn to be. Seems like a promising start — I’ll be sure to check out the next issue.

Billy the Kid’s Old Timey Oddities and the Orm of Loch Ness #1

Horror Comics Breakdown: 10/26/2012 - Dark Horse Delight

Ah, now we come to Billy the Kid’s Old Timey Oddities and the Orm of Loch Ness; written by Eric Powell with Tracy Marsh, and based on characters by Powell and Kyle Hotz, with art by Kyle Hotz. My favorite art of all three. So stylized, and so pretty, in a mysterious sort of way.

Also, who doesn’t love a good Nessie story! With outlaws in it to boot!

Horror Comics Breakdown: 10/26/2012 - Dark Horse Delight

This week, all of the comics are from Dark Horse. Mainly because, while there were other horror comics released, they all had already been ongoing. However, if you have the time and the money, I recommend the new Hellraiser series, which is written by Clive Barker, with art by Janusz Ordon. Barker has help writing it, but I’m in a rush, and if you’re going to buy them, you’ll find out. It’s up to 19 issues now.

Also, check out Crossed, written by Preacher and The Boys writer Garth Ennis, with art by Jacen Burrows. And in case you’ve been living under a rock, The Walking Dead is up to issue, what is it, one thousand right now?

So go out and read some horror comics. And prepare for Halloween! Hoo Hoo Haa Haa Haa!

Until next time, stay scared.
