Dave’s Cover of the Week

Adventure Time #13

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Mike Holmes

Dave: This is an excellent example of telling a story in a single image due to the eye’s ability to move around and piece things together. The free toy label, to the pirate cereal and to the parachuting cereal is incredibly fun and interesting to follow. These dudes are in serious trouble from multiple angles. Adventure Time has some of the best covers and I think it’s due to the freedom to draw nearly anything, whether it has anything to do with the story or not.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Thor God of Thunder #5

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Esad Ribic

Brendan: I love the vivid action on display, here. This really feels like a moment captured mid-battle between Thor and whoever this guy is. The calm, neutral colors chosen give this cover an ominous and morbid feel. Even Thor’s ruby-red cape is a bit worn and dull.

Dave: Ribic is a master at creating a very realistic image. The fact that the subject matter is fantasy makes it all the more epic when the imagery is so lifelike. I particularly love the blade the God Butcher is pulling on our man Thor.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Savage Wolverine #2

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Frank Cho

Dave: I wasn’t much of a fan of #1, but damn are these covers beautiful. Shanna, raptors and weird religious-looking dudes conveyed as if they’re backstory to what most are looking forward to—namely, Wolverine commencing with the chop chop.

Brendan: I feel bad for people who have to draw Wolverine. I mean, really how many poses does he even have? It’s either angry with claws down or angry with claws up; not much wiggle room. I’d also like to give props to Cho for saying “I know this is a Wolvie comic, but I will be damned if I don’t figure out a way to put a woman’s ass on this cover”. Well played, sir.

Avengers #6

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Dustin Weaver

Dave: Always a big fan of Captain Universe and I’m digging that a female version has joined the Avengers. Clearly it’s a way to power up the team because this lady can change a galaxy with a touch. The pretty space scenes look excellent as she bleeds into them. Great stuff.

Brendan: I enjoy the space background and the way it seems to be shaped by Lady Universe’s will. Outside of that this cover does feel a bit plain. I understand they can’t give away too much, but this cover feels like they aren’t even trying. They simply slapped her image on the cover and said “There she is! Buy the book!”

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Wolverine Max #4

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Jock

Brendan: In honesty this belongs in WTF as well, but the week was a bit heavy on the bizarre and there are multiple admirable qualities for this cover. I love the speed portrayed through the strokes of the skyline, as well as Wolvie’s positioning perfectly communicating his “ohshitohshitohshit” reaction. The lettering done on the side of the plane is also well executed.

Dave: It’s only February and Jock is already having a big year. I think the quality of this cover starts with the concept. It’s a plane, but it’s as if he’s pinned against a giant bullet. I bet he wishes he could fly, ’cause I’ve seen Supes pull this trick and stop planes before. Stupid pointless metal claws.

Russ’ Honorable Mentions

Nightwing #17

nightwing-preview

Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira

Russ: Nightwing vs. XO Manowar: Who ya got?

Also, I know Damian is still just a wee lad but do they have to make him look that much like an ugly Renaissance baby?

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Warlord Of Mars #23

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Joe Jusko

Dave: I’m not a fan of this for two reasons; one being the odd blank red space on the right and the other being the seemingly Photoshopped hand and sword. Our woman’s flapping butt cover and pose is a bit much too, but considering cheap comics like this are sold to little boys I guess it makes sense.

Brendan: Know what my gripe is? That’s a gross butt! I mean, if you’re going to be so blatant with your eroticism, at least make it appealing! That looks like the butt of some 50 year old italian lady at the beach. No thank you.

Dejah Thoris & Green Men Of Mars #1 (Variant)

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Jay Anacleto

Brendan: And on the other side of the spectrum we have too many curves in the incorrect places! Who even thinks of these poses? Is that supposed to be sexy? She looks like a dog peeing. But hey, grats on finding a pose where you can show off the T, the A and the V. That hatrick is hard to accomplish.

Dave: Good lord, look at that leg! Is she some kind of spider-woman? Somebody get Anacleto an anatomy class. If this was on purpose, which I doubt, then this is straight out of some kind of T/A/V nightmare.

Russ: Looks like Aeon Flux got into the trenbolone cattle steroids stash again!

G.I. Joe #1

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Steve Kurth

Brendan: Holy Beef McLargeHuge! Are these supposed to be human beings? They look more like the Koopa troopers from the iconic 1993 live action Mario Bros movie.

Dave: I get they’re supposed to be menacing, but those beedy eyes can’t be taken seriously. Plus our man in the background has his crotch right behind our man in the foreground. Makes me think there’s a third gun in this shot we can’t see. Shudder.

Harbinger #9

Comic Preview: 2/20/13 - Just One Chance to Fit T, A, and V

Khari Evans

Dave: Fat ladies need to stay out of comics!

Brendan: I demand more plus sized women in comics!
