Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 – Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Every Monday, comic guru David Brooke and comic sage Brendan Harvey discuss the upcoming comics of the week. They use their wise beards to stroketh out the finest and least finest covers the land has ever seen.

This week, Lady Death makes sultry look awkward, Morbius needs a bib, and KISS rocks the hairy chest.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Lady Death #28 Sultry Cover

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Renato Camilo

Dave: There is absolutely nothing sultry about her lumpy ass nor her pose. Is she getting ready to pee? Wtf is this cover?!

Brendan: In truth, there is no reason any person would be posed in such a way unless someone explicitly demanded “hey, let me look at your butt.”

Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed #1

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Ivan Nunes

Dave: What the eff is the werewolf doing? Is he grabbing an invisible breast? The pose is silly looking. It’s like he’s going, “rawr” in a fake British accent. No.

Okay, with that out of the way, dang is that vamp hot or what? I think her sultriness is all due to the colors as they add body and nice squishy.

Brendan: This looks like the professional version of a goth teen’s biology notebook: Ragin’ werewolves and smokin’ babes. For every decent quality on this cover the is an equal but opposite quality that leaves me with a general sense of “meh”.

KISS Solo #2: The Starchild

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Angel Medina

Brendan: Honestly, though. Why is this a thing? I can only assume that throughout the history of the medium we have already had our fair share of novelty rock icon comic books. So, why again? I mean, It’s not like KISS is even that much of a cash cow anymore, right?

If we want to just focus on the content of the cover, it’s pretty damn alright. There’s a bit of 90’s “Xtreme” flair going on, but I do enjoy the colors and the not-completely-phoned-in background.

Dave: This is for the chest hair loving crowd I think. Get a sociologist on this pronto and we’ll find out!

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Amala’s Blade #1

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Michael Dialynas

Dave: Holy cow, is this a chaotic cover. There’s a flipping frying pan complete with fried egg, arrows and axes whizzing by, and oh yeah, a whole lot of explosions! It’s made even stronger by the Tintin vibe I’m getting from the slightly cartoony art. Love this.

Brendan: I love the sense of action we get from this gigantic explosion. The white-hot fire perfectly outlines our hero as she leaps from certain doom. All the little touches of deadly projectiles keep your eyes moving around this cover.

Whispers #5

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Joshua Luna

Dave: Whoa, this is a trippy cover. At first glance it fits nicely in the WTF category, but give it a minute and you realize it’s all kinds of genius. The book is about a man fighting a demon right? So why not depict his very DNA battling said demon in every strand? Devil’s in the details indeed!

Brendan: There are two reasons this cover succeeds. First, the fact that every face is slightly different gives us a reason to continue looking. Second, the blood-red coloring and definitive shading (note how the light source favors the devil-strand) helps convey the concept of the cover. It’s the perfect combination of trippy and cool.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Unwritten #48

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Yuko Shimizu

Brendan: I love the design techniques used in this cover. The use of negative space in the stairway really causes everything to feel larger and deeper than they are. The colors are haunting and well proportioned and the detailed clouds are mesmerizing.

Dave: I’m not the only person who sees a trail of period blood right? Right?! Or is that just an odd robe? Either way, love the texture of the walls and clouds. They add a relieving look.

Witch Doctor Malpractice #6

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Lukas Ketner

Brendan: While it is a relatively simple cover I have to give some props for the skull optical illusion that has been created. From afar you can hardly recognize the detailed portraits that create our skull’s eyes. I also have to say that this may be the perfect “poison” green.

Dave: I was close to picking this cover myself. The detail in the acid is quite nice and the viscosity really adds to the danger of the stuff.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Morbius the Living Vampire #4

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

David Lopez

Brendan: The bloody grin is what sells it for me. There is so much character encompassed in that grin that I’m simply blown away. Beyond that, there is a excellent balance of simplicity and detail on display here. I love the choice to eclipse the eyes as well as add a shadow over his gaunt features. The bloody bat symbol may be a bit much but in all honesty I think it works.

Dave: I see this cover and think, “Wait is this reverse Batman?” The second thought that comes to mind is, “Boy, does he need a bib.” I do like how his teeth look covered in blood and the smirk is perfectly evil. For a character that was a hero for so many years it appears he’s tapping into the dark side.

Dave’s Cover of the Week

Queen Sonja #35

Comic Book Preview: 4/24/13 - Sultry Squats and Viscosity Issues

Lucio Parrillo

Dave: Mr. Parrillo, may I tell you first hand, you are a real talent. Your pencils amaze, but your colors are even better. The pale blue of our lady is made so much stronger by the shadow work and red blood splatter. This cover is all kinds of epic, and you even infused it with skulls, blood drippage, and fluttering leaves. Death abounds!

Brendan: Oh sure, Dave doesn’t like squatting Lady Death but give him squatting Queen Sonja and suddenly it’s pick of the week!

In all seriousness this is a gorgeous cover. The colors and shading are high quality and even though she is propped down into a sultry pose, it’s a pose that makes sense.
