Is It Good? Uncanny X-Force Vol. 2 #4 Review

Uncanny X-Force reached some impossible heights when Rick Remender was writing the book the last few years. He’s moved onto bigger flagship Marvel books, and writer Sam Humphries is in charge now. A new lineup of heroes and a new voice may put a lot of folks on edge, but is it good?

Uncanny X-Force Vol. 2 #4 (Marvel Comics)

Is It Good? Uncanny X-Force Vol. 2 #4 Review

Last issue Bishop showed up in full beast mode, complete with sharp teeth and a growl, looking for a little girl being protected by Spiral. She fled, and he’s still after her, but in the concluding pages we found out he’s being mind controlled after Psylocke jumped into his mind. This issue takes place exactly where it left off.

Love the mind bending art style here.

Artist Ron Garney does a particularly great job with the mind battle taking place with Psylocke and the unknown big bad bear. It’s artistic and interesting. The rest of the book is good, but I can’t help but wish there was more to it. Comics have already been reduced to 20 pages, but with pacing like this and 3 to 5 panels per page not a lot happens. For four dollars I’d expect a little more at least.

What is that purple outline going on?

Of course that’s not Garney’s fault really, but Humphries. We’re on the fourth issue, but really I could summarize the last four issues and you’d think it were two. Clearly this is your by the numbers, how the team got formed storyline, but it begs for a lot more character development and events. It also does a terrible job integrating the Fantomex clones. I think we’ve only been given five or so pages total in these four issues focused on them, and they only get one and a quarter pages in this issue, yet they’re on the cover! Kind of a cheat for anyone expecting them in this issue.

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

It’ll be a lot more interesting to see what happens in the next story arc, because aside from getting the team together there isn’t much to go on yet. The art is crisp and nice to look at, but the story has been less than stellar. On top of all that, the twist ending of this issue reads more like a cheat than a well earned twist. Maybe a couple of clues would have helped strengthen the surprise. Instead it’s just there on the page for you to go, “Oh…sure…alright then.”

  • The art has some killer moments
  • This issue is a fight scene and a twist. Bah!

This comic is way over priced. Maybe for 3 dollars I’d be okay with how little happens. The art is great for the most part, but not worthy of the price tag if there isn’t more story and character development to go with it.

Is It Good?

No. Bit of a waste. Still looking forward to the next arc though.
