WTF? Category

Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.

Grimm Fairy Tales Oz #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Ale Garza

Dave: Mr. Garza I commend you, but that is a whopper of a sideboob if I ever saw one. I suppose it’s not nudity, but this cover is rather outrageous. NSFW material at the very least.

Brendan: Dude knows how to draw a bitty, that’s for sure. On the ol’ smut scale this does rank pretty high, but it isn’t anything we haven’t seen from Zene before. In earnest, I’m more interested in the minute detailings of the cape, boots and cap. I think without those minor touches the cover would have fallen ironically flat.

Batman Incorporated #12

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Chris Burnham

Brendan: The majority of this cover is incredibly laughable. I adore Batman’s extended frame as well as his ability to basically lift that man by the leg alone. Plus, there is something about Batman’s face that reads as “Son, I am disappoint.”

Dave: I get that Bats wants revenge but can’t he do it without being so dramatic? Sheesh.

Absolution Rubicon #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Daniel Gete

Dave: Those blood geysers are totally radical! I wonder if this guy has problems with the ladies. Or maybe they love his tentacle loving.

Brendan: While it is a nonsensical gore-fest, I must admit I enjoy this cover. I love the concept of the heads being ripped and flung from the bodies. I only wish there was a bit more action involved as it does fall somewhat stale.

Michael Avon Oeming’s The Victories Transhuman #3

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Michael Avon Oeming

Dave: This is one of those awesome WTF covers that’s pretty spectacular, but deserves mention as a grossout mindfuck of a cover. That minotaur is bursting from that dude’s head! Gnarly stuff!

Brendan: That’s how minotaurs are born, David. Each and every one of them. Oeming isn’t my favorite artist, but I must admit that his work is always crisp and vivid.

Dave’s Honorable Mentions

Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1 (Variant)

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Mike Del Mundo

Dave: Look at the wonderful history of Deadpool…that never existed! Imagine if all of these really were things…or maybe they are and my Deadpool knowledge is lacking? Either way, Panda Deadpool is my favorite. What’s yours?

Brendan: Can’t say I remember a DeadPanda or a DeadOrca for that matter. While the concepts are cool, I hope this doesn’t devolve into another multi-book “Deadpool Corps” scenario.

Deadpool Kills Deadpool #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Mike Del Mundo

Dave: Thank god somebody is going to end the lives of these pitiful characters. It’s nice to see Deadpool taking his job seriously with practice. A good lesson for kids I say. Mundo captures the fun and silliness of Deadpool here, but also the realistic Deadpool in the foreground.

Brendan: At this point I’m fairly certain that Mundo created the concept of serious humor. I love the referential target art as well as Deadpool’s reflective stance.

Brendan’s Honorable Mentions

Fairest #17

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Adam Hughes

Brendan: I feel like there was a point in my life where I didn’t necessarily enjoy Adam Hughes. I mean, yeah, he draws a pretty lady but I never held him in higher regard than someone from Zenescope (no offense, guys). These Fairest covers have undoubtedly changed my mind. From simple detailing that brings the woman’s figure to life to the rich, dark linings that create her alligator hair (also, alligator hair? Awesome.), it’s covers like these that prove that Hughes is a remarkably talented man.

Dave: If I was a betting man I’d say the henna tattoos tell us the lady is a little loose and the red nose means she has a special relationship with whiskey. Either way, I don’t read this book, but those two details wouldn’t even be a factor by a lesser artist who’d stick to the gators.

Abe Sapien #4

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Sebastian Fiumara

Brendan: It’s the background that really sells me on this cover. If it weren’t for those bloodied hands and mouth, you would never have even noticed that perfectly camouflaged beast! That, along with an impressive and detailed foreground of our heroes makes this cover top-notch.

Dave: Nice body language of our heroes that tells us everything we need to know about this detective duo. The bloodied beast is incredibly vivid in his grotesque goriness.

Brendan’s Cover of the Week

Suicide Risk #3 (Variant)

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Tommy Lee Edwards

Brendan: Those blues and violets just grab me tight and SHAKE ME SENSELESS. Honestly, with only a few colors Mr. Edwards creates more content than those artists who are trying to use every crayon in the box. The touches of red splatter add another entire level of story that is truly intriguing.

Dave: A lot of nice touches bring this cover to another level. The fingertips making waves, the blood splatter and the white hair make this conventional-looking woman mean more than it seems.

Avengers A.I. #1

Comic Book Preview: 7/3/13 - Deadpool Orca Meets 8 Bit Heroes

Matthew Waite

Dave: There are only a few absolute truths in Dave Brooke’s life and one of them is this: if you make an 8 bit ode to anything I will lap it up. Seriously Marvel, get rid of the Scottie Young baby covers and do this for every book. You will gain extra sales from the nostalgic 20 to 35 crowd in droves.

Brendan: Now, don’t get me wrong. I love 8-bit everything. However, I feel like the nostalgia train has already left the station. On top of that, do the Capcom people get some type of royalty every time people rip off their Megaman sprite? If they do then they must be rolling in that Pokemon money.
