Where we don’t understand, are insulted by or would rather stab our eyes with acid pops than look at these covers for various reasons.
Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #31
Fabiano Neves
Dave: I’d like to point out Dejah has never had such big pasties before, so that’s a plus as far as making her less of a piece of meat. THAT SAID…that’s some upskirt if I do say so myself. Look, Neves is doing a good job with the perspective and foreground effectively popping Dejah out, and sure his contract probably states he has to draw Dejah all sexy, but the angle is a bit much.
Brendan: I do believe that for an “upskirt” shot one requires a skirt of some form. I do find it remarkable that this version of Dejah, whilst boasting 67% additional cameltoe also provides us with 40% more breast coverage than the norm.
Sexualization aside, that’s actually a pretty badass cover though, amirite?
Penny For Your Soul: Death #3

Dave: What is he doing with his left hand? Maybe if his dick was out he could plausibly be doing the “witness the cock of doom!” or some shit.
Brendan: It’s a basic power pose, David. You can find it in any eighth grade notebook that was filled with awkward super hero doodles instead of legitimate schoolwork.

Dave: Count the joints on his hands. I dare you, I double dog (pun intended) dare you! I count four…what kind of werewolf is sporting four joints? This guy must be sick in bed, that’s all I’m sayin.
Brendan: Dude’s right hand is definitely broken. Come to think of it, that’s probably why he looks so displeased.

Dave: I guess it isn’t very drafty in Oz. I mean, why else would you carelessly let your cape/dress flap open when you turn around to see if that creepy hobo is really following you all the while showing him a good amount of side boob?
Brendan: How are her boots so shiny? Are they made of platinum? How does she even put them on? I doubt she can even bend her knees in that getup.

King Conan: The Hour of the Dragon #6
Gerald Parel
Dave: Does Conan have to cut a bitch!? I guess he does. I’m kind of glad we got Conan doing some Halloween fighting at this time of year, but really the joy of this cover is the dark undead filling in around him. The white was a good choice; it helps Conan and the impending doom close in nicely.
Brendan: I have two issues with this cover. The first is that it isn’t done by Massimo Carnevale who quite frankly is unreachable in comparison of quality. Second would be that I feel like this “hero fighting through an unbeatable swarm of baddies” concept has been used quite often on many a cover and thus I’m rather bored of it.
When considering the actual artwork involved, I must admit it’s well done. I enjoy the dark colors that fade into blackness as you reach the outer rim of the cover.

Sandman Overture #1
J.H. Williams
Brendan: This week it’s all about the colors, friends. I am entranced by the vibrant and immersive colors displayed for us here. I also think the playful typography is a very intriguing touch.
Dave: The blue feathers are winning Brendan. Screw the immersive colors for a second, because the dark blue pops with those blacks. Everything else is inconsequential!

Brendan: While somewhat simple, I think the use of watercolors is very well executed. I love the cold, simple blues that depict our battle and the contrast provided by the red and orange chaos from behind.
Dave: It’s striking how the blue owl there is so simplistic, yet the mouse is decked in details. That conveys the raw power of the owl and the short straw our mousey has gotten.

Grimm Fairy Tales: Quest #1
Emilio Laiso and Ylenia di Napoli
Dave: This is a nice cover, mostly because the goddamn background is rendered so well. Sure, the girl has a bit of a boob drag issue, but let’s face it folks, this is an unconventional looking cover that commands your attention. I even scoped out the original pencil work and I have to say it is very clean and very tasty. Check the tiles, which are in hyper detail, and the colors by Ylenia di Napoli only increase the detail. The color is just right in those tiles; the scuff marks and the skin is particularly milky.
Brendan: I like to think her breasts are swaying violently as she cringes in pain (or fear, or anger, or whatever that emotion is supposed to be). It really helps you forgive their general wonkiness.
As Dave said, the quality in this cover lies within the fantastic flooring and background work. It’s simple yet beautifully complex.

Superior Spider-Man Team Up Special #1
Brendan: That tentacle tangle is fantastic. The way Ock’s metallic limbs have a sense of fluidity to them, especially in contrast with SpOck’s rigid mandibles, is very well done. I also love the use of red as a general fill while also providing some cool silhouetting effects for our X-Men.
Dave: Tentacle tangle. Somebody has created a tentacle-fetish and I’d like to take credit for it. To me this is a mishmash cover with a nice balance between characters. The white streak is the best part though. It cuts through the deep red and draws your eye.
