Community Review: Season 5 Episode 7 ‘Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality’

Community is back from a hiatus. I forgot, and only remembered days after the fact when I caught episode 7 on demand. Anyway, let’s check it out.

Chang sees ghosts, and British guy—uh…oh yeah, Professor Duncan—tries to get into Britta’s pants.

You could say Duncan tries to use Jeff as a…::sunglasses on:: …Britta filter.

Community Review: Season 5 Episode 7 'Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality'

It doesn’t really work due to…honestly, some kind of half-assed moralism Professor Duncan got out of nowhere at the end of the episode. Community often suffers from South Park-itis in that it usually tries to tack on a moral at the end of every episode that rarely feels like it needs to be there.

Abed has the most notable shit going on in this episode. There are some truly fist-biting moments where Abed stares at the seat Troy would be in while he makes a Kickpuncher costume (the Robocop rip-off in the Community universe). As Abed stomps through the halls acting like a cyborg alone, one gets the sense he’s super bummed out. He then runs into Professor Hickey, who is drawing his cartoon duck. Abed accidentally (or on purpose, who the hell knows?) sprays foam from his Kickpuncher costume onto the Professor’s drawings. They then of course bond, after Hickey handcuffs Abed to his file cabinet. It’s one of the only interesting aspects of the episode.

Community Review: Season 5 Episode 7 'Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality'

Another somewhat forgettable episode, save for a few funny lines here and there. We’re hitting the mid season lull, and without Troy, Abed is forced to buddy up with various other characters we normally don’t see him interact with. Case in point: Professor Hickey, or that chick he hung out with last episode we have yet to see again for some reason.

Is It Good?

It’s one you watch once, and never watch again. Fun in the moment, but hardly a pivotal episode. It’s another mediocre day; it wasn’t bad enough to really make you hit the booze, and it wasn’t good enough to give you a joy boner. It was on, it ended, life moved on.
