Is It Good? Ms. Marvel #2 Review

The first issue of Ms. Marvel was all about establishing the main character and the world she lived in before it got interrupted by superheroes. Now with the newest issue out, maybe we’ll see how she deals with these newfound abilities. Is it good?

Ms. Marvel #2 (Marvel Comics)

Is It Good? Ms. Marvel #2 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Kamala wakes up and discovers she has strange powers, powers that she is not very good at controlling. She can stretch her limbs like Mr. Fantastic, shapeshift, and even grow and shrink at will. Her world will never be the same after all of this…

Well, if she turned you literally into Ms. Marvel, shouldn’t your legs be longer or something?

This is a pretty slow moving comic. It’s basically about her learning her powers and realizing she wants to save and protect people. That’s pretty much it, and that’s rather disappointing. It’s not that the book is badly written or anything, it’s just that there isn’t much going on and it feels decompressed to a certain degree. With most of these new series Marvel’s putting out being particularly energetic and fast paced, this comic feels like it’s taking its time with moving forward.

Again, it’s not a poorly written comic. G. Willow Wilson’s characterization on this story is top-notch honestly, fleshing out and diving more into Kamala as a character and what these new powers mean. The things she does, what she thinks about, and how she reacts all feel very natural and makes sense from what we have seen of her. She’s really likeable overall and the kind of person you wouldn’t mind following. The other characters are fine and fit their roles well enough, still feeling like the kind of people one would see in a teenage drama (again, this feels like a hybrid of that and a superhero story). It’s well done stuff and I do look forward seeing how the character and her supporting cast develop.

Don’t call me Zoo and don’t butcher that great song, you drunk!

Besides the character work and the slower pace storytelling, the writing is good here. Dialogue and narration feels natural, with some good character bits and emotion. Speaking of which, the scene with Kamala and her family is good as well, seeing how much they care about her and their different perspectives of her. The ending is satisfactory, if a bit clichéd. There’s also a nice touch of humor as well, but not to where it would distract from the more poignant scenes. It’s slow, but well written in general.

The artwork looks good again. Characters are nice and distinct looking, with not one character looking the same as another. Panel layouts are decent, if a bit boring and average. Probably the highlight of the artwork is how the powers and transformations look when being used. How her appearance slowly or quickly changes between panels, how it conveys the increase in size and length when she stretches or grows her arms and hands, and the movement in the pages look great overall. Well done stuff and I’m curious to see more of this in future issues.

Is It Good?

Ms. Marvel #2 is a good, but rather slow issue. It feels like this origin is being stretched out a bit and you aren’t getting much with the story, but the writing remains strong in other parts of the book. While I do hope the comic picks up the pace a bit, I am still very much looking forward to where this series will go next.
