Is It Good? Aquaman and the Others #1 Review

It’s time for a brand new series from DC (haven’t seen one of those in a while). An Aquaman spinoff called Aquaman and the Others written by Dan Jurgens and drawn by Lan Medina. What can this duo bring us? Will the ongoing mission to make Aquaman a non-lame character in the eyes of the layman succeed? Is it good?

Aquaman and the Others #1 (DC Comics)

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Someone is attacking the Outsiders, trying to get artifacts created by the ancient king of Atlantis thousands of years ago. But that’s not all! The artifacts themselves are starting to weaken and not work properly. What is going on and who is attacking them?

Yeah… maybe they have it a bit better than you ghosts when I actually think about it.

This is a very solid first issue. It’s not groundbreaking stuff, but it does what any good first issue should do: it introduces the cast and gives them a bit of backstory and characterization, which is especially good in a team book. The plot gets going right away with a few storylines for us to follow (though oddly enough the idea of someone hunting down the Outsiders for their artifacts has already been done and the characters are barely two years old). We’re introduced to the villains as well, but details surrounding them are a little sparse so far (I’m sure more information will be revealed as the series continues). The issue also has a good ending cliffhanger, a rather ominous hint at things to come with Future’s End. All in all, it does all the right things a first issue should do.

Writing wise, it’s fine. Jurgens’ pacing and storytelling is fine and he introduces all of the characters and storylines efficiently. Dialogue is decent with a good touch of humor and mysteriousness in the right areas, though a bit ham-fisted with the opening bit with Prisoner of War. There are some decent character bits to help flesh out the cast like mentioned and they all feel different and unique personality and look-wise so they don’t just blend together. Some transitions from scenes are a bit awkward, but that’s pretty much it. It doesn’t really excite you a lot, but the writing is solid and well-crafted enough.

If so, then you need to give those things a new name, because otherwise they just sound silly.

The artwork by Ed Tadeo and Lan Medina is like the writing itself. It’s solid, not particularly groundbreaking or shocking, but gets the job done. The characters look good and look easily distinguishable from one another, especially with their decent costumes and designs. Layouts are good and so are the action scenes overall. Colors and inks are solid as well. There’s not much to comment here and that’s not a bad thing. The book looks good and is very fitting for its comic book world, but there’s not much else to say about it.

I think she needs to upgrade her costume. It’s starting to look a bit tattered in some areas.

Is It Good?

Aquaman and the Others #1 is a solid and well done first issue to this Aquaman spin-off. It does what every first issue should do with being able to introduce all the characters and story very well, while also having decent looking artwork. It may not set the world on fire like some other books, but if you have a superhero team itch that needs scratching, than this comic has what you are looking for.
