Is It Good? Justice League #32 Review

Last time around in Justice League we caught a glimpse of the new and improved (but classic) Doom Patrol along with Element Woman! What will the latest issue bring? Is it good?

The Doom Patrol is back in business with members Robotman, Elasti-Girl, Negative Man and Element Woman. Their first mission on the job is to bring down Power Ring before she destroys a city. However, Jessica Cruz can’t stop the ring or what it wants to do, which could lead to even more problems.

And I you say it again, I’ll punch you.

Story-wise Justice League #32 immediately picked up right where we left off in the last issue. It quickly provides the origins for the Doom Patrol members and establishes their personalities well. We also get to see them battle, alongside their leader, and see how operate in comparison to the Justice League. However, the issue also manages to push the regular story along fairly well. It follows up on some loose threads from the Forever Evil min-series with some decent surprises and keeps working fairly well on setting up the origin of the new Justice League we saw a glimpse of earlier in the arc. There’s a lot of story going on here and it’s all done well; a tip of the hat to writer Geoff Johns.

People may raise an eyebrow at the depiction of The Chief here, but otherwise everyone else is pretty good (we even get to see Jessica Cruz’s backstory as well). The dialogue is strong and infused with plenty of personality and emotion. The pacing is solid, story flow is fine, and the ending is pretty solid (though one must wonder how he got there so quickly).

Why don’t you all stop smiling? You are really creeping the hell out of me.

The artwork is brought to us by Doug Mahnke and he does a fairly decent job. His layouts are good, his action is static but decent looking and there’s plenty of good imagery and scenes that are depicted well (loved the scene where we find out the backstory for Power Ring and Jessica Cruz as it was very well laid out and eye catching). His main weakness is with his characters — in particular their faces. They look really creepy and unsettling with their dead eyes and weird grins. The coloring is a bit on the bland side as well — which doesn’t help a lot of the artwork at times. Still, it does its job overall, but I’m hoping that Ivan Reis returns soon.

Is It Good?

Justice League #32 is another enjoyable issue of the series, introducing us to the classic Doom Patrol and delivering on a very enjoyable story. If the artwork was a bit better or brighter, I think this issue would have been even better. As it is though, there’s still a lot to enjoy, so definitely check it out.
