Is It Good? Avengers #36 Review

Hickman’s Avengers ends in 7 months and things finally seem to be heating up in the title.

While I wasn’t too fond of some of the choices made, I am more curious than ever in seeing how the rest of the run will play out. Is it good?

Avengers #36 (Marvel Comics)

After seeing Smasher and Cannonball have a character moment (holy shit, they’ve shared more than one scene together now), we check in on Sunspot and his new buddies at AIM as they get a plan underway; a plan to possibly save the universe or something involving a lot of other characters. As for the Avengers and Illuminati? They are not important and thus not seen here.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Okay, admittedly I might have been a bit too harsh on the previous issue, since things were at least happening and it seemed to get some interesting storylines going. This issue felt like a cross between a character focused and plot focused one. One might say “That means this is a normal issue,” but not really. Neither focus seems to flow and instead the entire issue comes off with two very glaring, very separate tones. One has personality and humanity to it (sort of) and the other is a completely cold and dry sci-fi tale. Neither really worked or mixed well together here since neither are particularly enjoyable to read.

The character stuff is mediocre and doesn’t feel very real — particularly the scenes with Smasher and Sunspot. They barely interacted during this entire series and just don’t have chemistry together. Same with the other characters; we’ve barely seen them interact with one another during the comic, so this whole friendship thing isn’t very believable. I appreciate the effort, but it feels far too late. The story portion is just completely dull and dry. The dialogue has no personality or emotion to it (it feels like techno-jargon at points); the comic is just raising more and more questions to the point where you are wondering if the story will be able to answer everything in a satisfactory way; the story feels like its dragging on and on, never really getting to the point; and ultimately, it barely feels like the plot goes anywhere except at the end. It’s just disappointing overall and doesn’t make for an enjoyable experience.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I don’t really have any clue what they are talking about either.

Okay, the writing and story were weak, but how about the art? Instead of multiple artists, we just have series regular Stefano Caselli and that’s always a foreboding sign to me. Caselli is a decent artist… but everytime he happens to be working on Avengers, the series is always at a very low and slow point. As such, he doesn’t really get much to draw or allow himself to really stretch. There’s nothing particularly exciting or eye catching about the issue — it’s standard fare. The characters look fine, the layouts are alright, and the coloring is okay. But there’s just… nothing really particularly memorable.

Is It Good?

Avengers #36 is a bit of a misstep after all the potential and excitement the previous issue had set up. It’s a boring issue where little happens, the story is not remotely engaging, the characters are forgettable, and the artwork has nothing to really show.

I was curious about what this issue would be like after what we got last time, but having read it, what enthusiasm I had for this arc is slowly dwindling. Please get this comic back on track soon writer. The end is nigh.
