Is It Good? Sex Criminals #9 Review

After two long months, one of the funniest comic books currently on shelves finally returns. Sex Criminals #9 kicks off Suzie and Jon’s attempts to thwart the Sex Police, as well as hopefully doing something about the library. Can they succeed? Is it good?

Well, to be fair, they only get to those points somewhat. This issue, however, is largely about Suzie’s history with sex, and her sordid past as an easy party girl turned stripper turned model turned porn star. Oh, and her onetime affinity for cocaine (they didn’t call her Jazmine St. Cocaine in the porn world for nothing, after all). It’s definitely welcome exposition, and changes my perception of Suzie, whom I used to view as more of a girl next door type. It adds plenty of nuance to Suzie as a character, and makes it all the easier to connect with her.

Fans of Jon: sorry, outside of a fight with Suzie that eventually becomes the catalyst for the cliffhanger of the issue, he is sort of a non-factor here. All good though; we’ve already learned plenty about him, it was Suzie’s time to shine.

Another thing I should mention about this issue is that it’s pretty damn graphic. This series has never been shy about the boobs and dongs, but this issue turns it up to 11. It was actually pretty difficult to find a screen shot for this review that was safe for work. Nudity litters the first half of the comic; there’s strap ons, there’s bush, there’s doing cocaine off a stripper’s ass…basically either hell on earth or one hell of a Saturday night, depending on your purview, so consider it a warning. For my money the issue largely works and some of the gags and puns are laugh out loud funny, no matter how juvenile (I’d pay money for a movie directed by Clit Eastwood).

There’s not really much to say about the art–Chip Zdarsky delivers another solid issue on that front, complementing the laughs with his signature style. I’ve been a fan of the visuals this entire series, and this issue does nothing to change that.

Is It Good?

Don’t ever leave us for two months like that again! Sex Criminals continues to be one of the funniest books on shelves, and well worth the price of admission.
