Is It Good? All-New Hawkeye #1 Review

Jeff Lemire, the former writer of Green Arrow (one of the best damn superhero comics and comic series in general from last year) is helming another archer book and I want in.

Now that All-New Hawkeye is here, let’s ask the question: Is it good?

All-New Hawkeye #1 (Marvel Comics)

Clint and Kate, AKA Team Hawkeye, have been sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. to infiltrate a Hydra base to find out what new special weapon they got cooking up. Their mission may be a bit more difficult since they can’t seem to find what they are looking for when they get there and there seems to be tons and tons of Hydra agents all over the place. However, with a duo like this, they shouldn’t have that much of a problem.

Also flashbacks.

All-New Hawkeye #1 focuses primarily on Kate and Clint as they run through a Hydra base and fight off goons, bantering and bickering with one another. As far as introducing the characters to new readers, the issue does a good job at establishing Clint and what kind of guy he is, even throwing in some fancy looking flashbacks, while also following up on a few plot points from the previous run. However, the issue doesn’t introduce Kate all that well or give you much of an idea of her, outside of being a sort of disgruntled and frustrated former protégé of Hawkeye (not the greatest way to introduce someone to new readers). This should be fine for readers who know these characters well, but for newcomers… not as much.

Lemire’s writing is strong. Clint and Kate show some great chemistry and their dialogue features plenty of great lines, like Kate’s reaction to the name that Clint gives one of his arrows. Like I said, not much actually happens in this issue, but it’s a nice follow up to the previous run while still doing its own thing when it comes down to the writing and style the comic is bringing.

The artwork is a treat: Ramon Perez does some very nice line work, making for a debut issue that flows very nicely from panel to panel. The characters look very clean, though the amount of expressions they exhibit seem a bit limited due to the more simplistic style the artist is using. The action is well constructed, while the flashbacks look incredible and dreamlike (one double page spread felt a little bit tricky to follow though). The coloring by Ian Herring (I believe Ramon did some work as well here) looked absolutely lovely, using a nice flat style for the present and a more watercolor-like style for the past. What I really like though was how well the both the flashbacks and the present day scenes were integrated near the end. Easily some of the best artwork I’ve seen in a Marvel book in quite a while.

Is It Good?

All-New Hawkeye #1 is a fun start to this new series. It’s good for long time fans of Hawkeye, though difficult for newcomers at points. The story is light, but the character interaction is a lot of fun. The artwork is beautiful and quite eye-catching. This is a book to keep an eye on, because I feel it will only get better from here on.
