I skipped 13 Coins #5, but it doesn’t feel like I have missed anything. Parts of The Son are still clamoring to kill John Pozner so The Fallen will have no chance to release Semyaza. Meanwhile, The Fallen continue to pursue the path to power by taking control of the U.S. government through a puppet all the while hunting down Pozner and The Son.

As far as the characters, Pozner seems to be coming into his own. He is no longer distraught about the death of his girlfriend, nor is he motivated by hate. He seems to actually be fighting to stop The Fallen and feels a kinship towards a few of The Son. Most of the other characters remain static. Samuel is a hothead who continues to fly by the seat of his pants and gives somewhat decent commands. Gwen yammers on about killing John or roughly apologizing when he saves people’s lives. Even when she has a sword through her chest she is calling for his death. It gets a little tiring. The current President and past Speaker of the House sticks with his fetishes and begins acting like Gollum with the One Ring, but instead it is one of the 13 coins. There is really nothing to see and it appears the only reason they show him is for the shock factor of BDSM, but I guess that is all the rage now with Fifty Shades of Grey. The only other somewhat interesting character besides Pozner is Rameel. He actually has ambitions to free Semyaza and a plan to do it. Even when that plan backfires he attempts to adjust while still working to achieve his primary goal.

Simon Bisley’s artwork remains grisly. He has decided to up the mature factor in this issue. Every time a woman’s chest appears in a panel he makes sure you know they aren’t wearing bras. Not to mention they just look strange and completely fake. There are also some panels where he decides to have the girls’ jeans sag down exposing half their butts. They are about to go slay a bunch of demons with their pants riding down! I also take issue with some of the combat scenes. Apparently, if you get stabbed through the chest with a giant katana you are going to survive. It happens not once, but twice to two different characters!

Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson’s writing felt contrived, especially concerning the dialogue between Pozner and Rameel at the end. Rameel and The Fallen have used violent methods to capture Pozner and when this backfires Rameel decides to use sweet words in a vain attempt to lure him away. It was unnecessary and takes away from a decent action sequence from Bisley where the two were duking it out extensively. It also seemed heavily influenced from Revenge of the Sith: “Give in to the dark side and we can bring your girlfriend back from the dead.” … There were also random dialogue points from Samuel’s daughter that were superfluous. We don’t need three different characters letting Samuel know “That’s Crazy!”

Is It Good?

13 Coins #6 is a mediocre ending to a mediocre series. John Pozner was never a really compelling character and he just seems to get a tad interesting in this last (maybe) issue. Most of the other characters are static and continue to echo the same lines throughout the book.

Bisley’s artwork is definitely for mature audiences. He decides to display braless women with their butts hanging out of their pants as they slay demons. It doesn’t fit into the rest of the world he has built with Brennan and Jackson. If you aren’t already reading this series, I would not recommend starting it.
