Rick and Morty #6 Review

If you’ve seen the hit TV show you know Rick and Morty likes to get weird. Given the science fiction subject matter it’s easy for it to do, but what if a story had no set up and simply dropped you into the weird right off the bat? That’s what the latest issue is like. Is it good?

Really, just take a good look at the cover of this issue. That’s all the backstory you need to understand what is going on. The issue opens with what appears to be some South American rebels holding guard. Going against stereotypes two of these guards are not violent evil killers but lovers who want to break away. Cue a horrible death for both of them due to the “heroes” entering the scene.

Love lost.

Why does this comic book matter?

So far this series has been all kinds of fun and funny with really not much backstory necessary to enjoy it. The characters go on done-in-one adventures each issue which allows anyone to pick up it up and get going. I simply loved the last issue as it was well paced and full of humorous moments.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This is pretty insane to say the least. Every character is new, there is no setup or context as to what we’re seeing or why we’re seeing it, which makes it even more of a wild card than this series already can be. When there are no rules however, comedy wins. It’s quite exciting to read because you’re desperately hoping for some explanation, but at the same time it’s wildly breaking stereotypes and making little sense in a good way. There is a big reveal at the end that isn’t so surprising—it’s only surprising because there was no information delivered until that point—since we’ve seen this subject in the show.

Stanky is a funny word.

The art by Andrew MacLean ain’t bad either. It hits the right notes when it comes to visual gags and silly expressions. The gore is perfectly over the top and it’s all very well composed and exciting. I’ll tell you: You haven’t seen a better looking man’s nose fall off, or a more perfectly drawn Normalhead Regulararms in your life.

It can’t be perfect can it?

The story is a slightly different affair, at least when it comes to Rick and Morty themselves. I don’t want to ruin anything, but let’s just say Rick and Morty don’t spend much time on the page. Anyone looking for a good yarn from these characters will most likely be disappointed, but if you’ve seen the recent episode Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate you can gather what this issue is on about.

Still, the entire issue doesn’t connect itself to the main series very well. It all reads like an excuse for writer Zac Gorman to do whatever he wants. The story isn’t bad, but it belongs in an anthology elsewhere.

The art is solid as I stated above except for one very odd looking Rick. He’s just not as solidly drawn as he has been in the past.

Torture is no big deal.

Is It Good?

“Will this comic make me laugh?” is the question and for me it did. It’s absurd in all degrees and it looks great while doing it. Go in with zero expectations and don’t expect Rick or Morty to have much of a say in any of it and you’ll be fine.
