Is It Good? Spider-Man 2099 #2 Review

There are Spider-Man purists who think the only Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Then there are those who are a little more open to other Spider-Men and I’m one of them. For me the 2099 version is cool because he’s a bit different on the power set and also has a sick costume. It’s all about the costume. I take a look at the second issue in the new series: is it good?

Is It Good? Spider-Man 2099 #2 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

Last issue we learned Miguel aka Spider-Man 2099 was working for Parker Industries and he was in love. Well, that all ended when an explosion rocked the restaurant he was in with his boo and this issue opens three days later when Miguel wakes up in the hospital.

Why does this comic book matter?

Writer Peter David and artist Will Sliney have done a bang up job since joining forces and the story has been quite good. The art is solid too, with some near lifelike art. The character is strong as well with nice characterization. What’s not to love!? Plus, this issue unveils the new costume.

This isn’t going to end well.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Miguel is very well written here as his emotions are all over the charts. He’s dealing with some serious PTSD, loss and quickly jumping out of the hospital bed and into battle. In this state it’s fun to follow him around as he tries to uncover who committed the terrorist act he was involved in with some nice surprises along the way.

David also shows us how he’s a bit different than Peter in more ways than one. Take for instance Miguel’s feelings on killing or the fact that he has a handy hologram computer on his wrist from the future. It does make one question why Peter hasn’t reverse engineered that tech, but that’s a minor quibble. Meanwhile the bigger picture story is coming into focus and it’s exciting to see things will most assuredly come to a head.

Meanwhile Sliney’s art continues to look great. Similar to the last issue there are a surprising number of panels with Miguel not in the costume, but it is unveiled here so that’s something. He keeps things interesting with some good acting from the characters and nice layouts to keep the drama up. The issue ends on a highly dramatic splash page that should get people’s blood up for the next issue.

So these guys are evil, right?

It can’t be perfect can it?

Two things bothered me while reading this issue. The first is the narration, which is displayed with red text in a blue background box. It’s just tough to read at times and I missed a period here or there. The second is Miguel’s miraculous survival from an explosion. It makes sense since he’s a superhero, but most of the people in this comic don’t know that, and yet they aren’t surprised that he lived and 23 other people died? Seems like an oversight that could have been mined for story elements. Ah well.

Doom makes an appearance.

Is It Good?

This is another good issue with great character development as Miguel goes through hell. The action is low and some minor gripes aside this is a solid read every month.
