Rick and Morty #10 Review

There haven’t been many multi-part episodes of Rick and Morty. Sure there might be subtle plot details that carry over, but “to be continued” isn’t something you really see. That isn’t the case with the comic book however and we’re now encountering the end of a long four-issue story.

Is it good?

Rick and Morty #10 (Oni Press)

Rick and Morty #10 Review

Rick and Morty have come to a version of Earth where Rick is dead and Morty runs everything as a dictator. His sister Beth has asked them to help her and now Rick is captured and Morty (of our Earth) doesn’t know what to do. Great. Just great.

Why does this book matter?

One of the most popular shows right now (okay fine the most popular show right now) is on hiatus so this is the only way to get your Rick and Morty fix! Plus the four-part story ends in this issue. Dammit, don’t you want to know what happens?!

Rick and Morty #10 Review
Get up old man!

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

This issue revolves around getting a portal gun and there’s a nice Sega joke in there for those of you who remember who/what Sega is. Essentially there’s a lot of violence – nothing new for this series – and with it a lot of sentimentality. Sisters loving brothers, brothers realizing the universe hates them and that’s okay. Stuff like that. Zac Gorman succeeds at making the emotional resonance work. Which of course leads up to a joke which I won’t ruin here.

The conclusion proves Gorman is a bit of a meta nerd too. Fans should find it funny, but then again it takes a lot of dialogue to basically say Zac Gorman is awesome.

I guess this is funny?

The art by CJ Cannon with Cat Farris on inks and Ryan Hill on color is fantastic. It does a great job making this look like the cartoon. Backgrounds and setting are highly detailed too. Detailed environments help set the stage and make this world look futuristic in all its science fiction glory.

The backup story by Marc Ellerby is fantastic. It’s a funny story about Jerry and his “job interview” which turns out to be anything but. It captures the sad nature of the character wonderfully and his ignorance to his lazy ineptitude. It’s four pages but feels quite longer due to the dense layouts that pack each page with plenty of panels.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Remember that bit about sentimentality I mentioned above? Yah, the main story is filled with it and there’s so much of it I’m not sure where the humor has gone. Even a flashback, a decided cutaway moment that could change gears completely, brings all the sentimentality the previous pages kept adding on. Ultimately this issue is all about an alternate universe where family love prevails – sort of – and it of course goes very badly. Maybe it’s due to Rick being tied up for most of this issue, but it wasn’t funny enough for fans looking for a laugh.

Is It Good?

A fantastic backup can’t completely save a sentimental main story. It’s not a bad story, but it’s just not funny enough.
