Black Canary #7 Review

Okay, looks like I was wrong last time. THIS issue is the ending to the first story arc of Black Canary. Let’s take a look and see what everything was building up to. Is it good?

The Lowdown

Dinah Lance has a chance to make things right. A strange and malevolent creature that destroys sound and frequency has been hunting her and the band for several months now to get at Ditto. Kurt has a solution to stop it and finally make Ditto safe once and for all. However, will it be enough to defeat a monster that is emptiness itself?

The Yays

In many ways, the seventh issue feels like an epic conclusion for the series in and of itself. It wraps up most of the continuing story and plotlines that have been going on throughout the series from the beginning with the Quietus and a few recurring foes. There’s resolution for the entire band and their arc (though one character is absent it appears) and of course, the big showdown. We get answers to questions from the past, like how did Ditto disappear in the last issue, and for the most part, it all feels satisfying. Everyone got a chance to shine and contribute to this fight in comparison to the last issue. The only question that remains is the ending and where the comic goes from here.

While Brenden Fletcher’s writing remains fairly good when it comes to characterization (though it struggles a bit more than usual in other parts, like with the exposition heavy dialogue), the art team of Annie Wu and Lee Loughridge is still the big highlight of the comic. While the layouts aren’t as a creative or energetic as the last issue (besides one really wonderfully constructed page), Wu still does a great job crafting each page and each piece of imagery. The action is intense and comes out looking especially strong when the dialogue and sound effects disappear for a bit. The motion and energy of the characters as they move and fight feels fluid and smooth, and the colors add to these sequences (they’re not as vibrant as the previous issue, but still rather good). Black Canary #7 is just great looking all around.

The Nays

While it was neat to see this comic wrap things up or put an end to most of the plot points, it did run into a big problem: the execution of the issue was rather flawed due to how rushed it felt. The best way to describe it is that Black Canary #7 felt like the last issue a comic series that was cancelled. The storylines and character arcs felt rushed, with the first half of the comic dealing with mostly exposition as it tried to explain all the plot details and reasons for what is going on — this makes the first half also rather slow and a bit contrived with how everyone just shows up at this one spot or how things just sort of ended up at this particular point. The fight scene in and of itself was enjoyable to watch, but it felt like there needed to be one or two more issues before it to help build up to the finale better.

Also, the ending page feels rather confusing and ends on an abrupt note. The tone to it and the way narration goes feels wholly different from the rest of the issue. While certainly intriguing and has my interest, the execution and out of nowhere feel to it also kind of hurts the overall product.

Is It Good?

Black Canary #7 in theory is an enjoyable and fine finale to end the first arc of the series. It wraps up almost everything and leaves off on an interesting note to hook the readers into staying around for a while longer. However, the execution and the rushed nature of how matters ended resulted in problems that took away from the ending. While there are still plenty of things to remain interested in and see what happens in the future, the issue doesn’t measure up to the preceding ones that came before.

Look for the collected edition when it arrives March 2nd, 2016 if you are still interested in checking out the series. Despite the ending, it is worth a look.
