The Lowdown

A gigantic killer crustacean from other space that spews out mini-crustaceans starts attacking New York City… and, of course, the Justice League shows up to stop it! Elsewhere, classic Superman is talking with his wife about whether or not he should get involved, or to just continue laying low.

The Breakdown

Justice League: Rebirth is a solid introduction issue. Writer Bryan Hitch does well in introducing all the members of the team, their roles and strengths for the group, building off events from the recent Death of Superman storyline, and hinting at some storylines for the series to follow in the future. TL;DR: Justice League: Rebirth #1 at sets up the new status quo and what readers can expect with this simple done-in-one (unless the giant enemy space crab comes back).

However, other than that Justice League: Rebirth #1 doesn’t bring much else to the table; the issue doesn’t connect strongly on any emotional and dramatic level (outside of one small bit with Wonder Woman), the action is a bit stiff; it’s not particularly funny and none of the teased storylines seem all that interesting either. The issue really needed to a bit more or should have hit the audience with something unexpected, especially since this is an issue meant to get people pumped and excited to see the new series. In the end, it all just made for a rather unremarkable, ho-hum issue, especially compared to some of the other Rebirth premiere issues like Titans: Rebirth or Wonder Woman: Rebirth.

Oh you and your silly conspiracies honey.

Hitch’s writing still ultimately works though. I especially liked his opening and closing narrations, as they fit thematically with the book and its grandiose feel. While some of his dialogue can be off or doesn’t fit a few characters well in some spots, for the most part it’s convincing enough. There were some continuity flubs/ sketchiness at times, like with Jon being portrayed much younger than he is in the main Superman book, but other than that Hitch gets the job done.

The artwork is good, but features some parts that are weaker than others. Hitch is very good at constructing layouts and scenes that flow very well from panel to panel and his action, while stiff, can look epic. He’s great at depicting detailed locations, heroic looking spreads or group shots, there’s no denying that. The biggest gripe I have is the way he draws the characters themselves; while he nails the characters’ musculature and appearance most of the time, he seems less invested in drawing a character’s face/head; for instance, a character’s facial expression doesn’t match the scene they’re in, a person’s eyes aren’t leveled or are crooked, their head’s too small, or they look too old with how many lines there are in their face. It can be distracting at times, especially in moments where we’re supposed to be taking things seriously.

Is It Good?

Justice League: Rebirth #1 is a perfectly fine start to the new Justice League series, but not a spectacular one. It does everything it needs to do regarding setup and establishing things, but nothing more beyond that. It feels lacking, like it just needed one more thing to really push it over the edge. While the writing is good and the artwork does give the book an epic feel to it, you wouldn’t miss too much if you put off getting this issue for now.
