Suiciders: Kings of HelL.A. #6 Review

It’s the end for the Vertigo series that I called, “Gripping, relentless, haunting, unnerving and deeply human,” and it seems too soon. The characters are rushing for safety, but before I get ahead of myself, is it good?

So what’s it about? The Vertigo summary reads:

After the events of the previous issue, there’s no returning to normal for the Kings of HelL.A. With both the Mulholland Corp and the police dropping the hammer on the kids, the ones who make it out alive are going to have to decide which way they want their lives to go: get out of the gang life, or die trying. Meanwhile, Leonard and Ellroy have their final showdown. Featuring a special epilogue illustrated by series creator Lee Bermejo.

Why does this book matter?

Lee Bermajo is writing (and doing the covers) for this sequel of sorts about a world where the big one hit California and changed everything. The series gets to the core of what we become when the law dissolves and survival reigns. It appears the characters will finally reach some level of safety, but damn, has Bermajo proved there’s nothing you can count on with this series.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

A happy ending is in store for them?

Bermejo splits this story between Troy and his girlfriend getting out of dodge and Leonard confronting Ellroy and the cutting back and forth works to drive the story. It keeps things interesting too, with well timed cutaways with both stories ramping up to their ends. It gets violent, dicey and more importantly emotional. Ellroy and Leonard’s fight borders on too much at one point, but it’s a fitting end for their story.

Geraldo Zaffino draws a mean issue with a dark tone and plenty of blood to show for it. The layouts are quite good too, which help keep the story turning with a good pace. The epilogue that ends the book is drawn by Bermejo and is quite nice. There’s some truly haunting stuff from both that may just stick with you.

It can’t be perfect can it?

I’m not sure why artist Alessandro Vitti isn’t finishing this series off (let’s hope he’s okay!), but the tone of Zaffino’s work throws things off a bit. It’s certainly darker and a bit less expressive with the facial expressions. The style is certainly not bad, but it throws things off a bit.

The general plotting is a bit off too. The slower pace is kicked up a notch seemingly to conclude things and wrap elements of the story up. We also never get to see what deal Troy pulled so the conclusion doesn’t do enough to explain what is happening. Regardless, the ending does still makes sense save for a lack of explanation.

Time to throw down.

Is It Good?

The end rockets to its finish and you’re bound to find some violent and haunting moments throughout.
