Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #7 Review

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about? The DC summary reads:

“SINESTRO’S LAW” part seven! Sinestro’s Law concludes as Hal Jordan and Sinestro come to blows for control over the universe. With his back against the wall, will Hal’s friends show up in time to tip the scales in his favor?

Why does this book matter?

Last issue set up the throwdown of the month as Hal Jordan is taking on the entire Yellow Lantern clan with his willpower and nothing more. He’s not aware the Green Lantern Corps are on their way, but can he survive long enough to stay alive by the time they arrive?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Time for backstory.

This is a good jumping on point if you’re contemplating trying this out as it opens with a solid recap of Hal and Sinestro’s backstory. It jumps right into their fight and Robert Venditti does a great job keeping them conversing with meaningful and interesting dialogue. You get the sense they’ve been wanting to get this fight underway for ages, which helps give the battle a sense of gravitas. Venditti also lets loose with plenty of fun constructs, like a slew of missiles, a train, and even a saber! The issue delivers if you’re interested in fight comic action.

Subplots develop well too, for Guy and for Sinestro’s daughter. I’ll say no more to avoid spoilers, but it’s nice to see how it all leads to the cliffhanger that’ll make you wonder what could possibly come next. Speaking of conclusions, while it’s hard to say what happens next, the battle between Hal and Sinestro feels conclusive.

The art by Rafa Sandoval keeps you interested with all the constructs looking fantastic (colorists aren’t given enough credit for how cool they make them and Tomeu Morey does great here) with each page dripping with detail. Backgrounds of rubble, outer space, and the Fear Engine all look great too. I continue to say this, but this series feels like an event book due to the epic nature of the story and the great art.

It can’t be perfect can it?

It’s too early to pass judgment per se, but Hal does some nasty stuff in this issue that’s borderline murder. We’ll see what happened really, but it gets pretty gory and graphic and I’m curious if the events here basically made him a villain. We shall see!

Hal can really rock the saber.

Is It Good?

Explosive, exciting, and well worth a look. Venditti is putting on a memorable Green Lantern story we won’t soon forget.
