Uncanny Avengers #16 Review

Deadpool was rejected, Captain America disbanded the team (jerk), and yet threats still need smiting. The team is taking on their biggest challenge yet and it’s big, green, and used to wear purple pants. Question is, is it good?

Why does this book matter?

Gerry Duggan blew me away with the first issue of the new arc last issue and with the plot setup and the stakes in play how can you do wrong here? Pepe Larraz draws a mean comic too (with colorful pop from David Curiel). With Deadpool funnier than ever why not give this a chance?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Uncanny Avengers #16 Review
Snap out of it!

This issue opens with Deadpool going through some kind of Japanese dream come true, complete with a parade, a mecha Deadpool, and a sushi dinner laid out on a naked woman. Clearly something was jostled in his brain. Duggan makes it get really weird, really fast, which sets the somewhat chaotic and fun issue. As the characters kick and punch for their lives there’s plenty of good teamwork in play (as well as quips from Deadpool) and Cable’s story progresses nicely too.

If you dig big superhero action you may not find anything better this week. Huge punches, double page splashes, and superhero action take place. Deadpool does a lot of lying around mostly because his power set is outmatched here, but it’s all in good fun.

The art is gorgeous as ever, with Hulk brandishing a samurai helmet and cool accouterments that give him an evil look. He’s lost his mind (presumably) so he rages quite a bit. Deadpool has a killer blast of the eye in every scene and Quicksilver looks fast and electric with his purple flashes. Doctor Voodoo looks all kinds of magical too (the hypnotic colors around him are trippy as hell).

It can’t be perfect can it?

While Deadpool is funny, again, he doesn’t do a whole lot. Ultimately not a lot happens in the issue in general, with two full pages somewhat wasted on Wasp attempting to reason with the Hulk. It allows for a good joke from Deadpool, but by the end of the issue you’ll note only two real developments take place. It’s a fight comic though so it deserves a bit of a pass there through last issue was stronger.

Or whatever.

Is It Good?

This is a downright fun action comic that looks great. There are a few chuckles in store for you too. Altogether this is the most fun you can have with an superhero action comic.
