The Little Prince: The Art of the Movie Review

Last year, Mark Osborne directed a delightfully artistic adaptation of the classic children’s book, The Little Prince. Voiced by an all-star cast of celebrities, Osborne’s film made its US debut via Netflix and has found its way into the hearts of a new generation. A few months later, Titan Books has included the film within its latest lineup of The Art of the Movie books.

The Little Prince: The Art of the Movie (Titan Books)

The Little Prince is one of the most intriguing animated films in recent history with its utilization of stop-motion and computer-generated animation. This Titan book shows the reader the unique creative process and incredibly daunting task of adapting such an infamous piece of children’s literature. Starting with entries from Jeff Bridges and director Mark Osborne, editor Ramin Zahed takes us through the film’s inception, environment and character designs, and the visual effects. In just over 150 pages, the reader is able to get a comprehensive view of one of the latest visually stunning animated films.

Even more so than the film, this book itself is a true work of art, starting with the hardbound textured cover. Depicting the sand dunes, the aged aviator and the little prince himself, you’re immediately drawn in with the book’s cover featuring a rough, painted surface and visible brush strokes. While other Art of the Movie books focus on covering the details behind the creative process, this book is truly dedicated to the art and is filled with full page spreads of concept art and environmental designs.

The book goes into depth describing not only what was utilized to create the animation, but why it was used. For example, stop-motion director Jamie Caliri explains the use of paper within the animation as a symbolic gesture towards the importance of storytelling as seen throughout the entirety of the film. These descriptions from the creative team not only provide insight from a directing standpoint, but gives fans more context to better appreciate the movie’s qualities, making this a great holiday gift for future-animators and film aficionados.

Conclusion

Titan Books has been making a name for itself with this series of documentary books and The Little Prince continues to uphold their high standard of both quality and content. This book looks and feels like a piece of art in and of itself, while also providing a great deal of behind the scenes information you couldn’t get otherwise.
