Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #10 Review

Why is it when a team is in trouble it’s always one singular person that needs to save them? In this case he’s dead, so I’m thinking the Green Lantern Corps are in big trouble. We check out this latest issue to answer the question, is it good?

So what’s it about? The summary reads:

“BOTTLED LIGHT” part three! Trapped in a bottle by Larfleeze, the combined Green Lantern and Sinestro Corps find themselves in a race against time to escape from their bottled world as Kyle Rayner searches for a way to reunite with the Corps!

Why does this book matter?

Since Hal Jordan discovered he can turn himself into sheer will, things have been very different for the character. After blowing up Sinestro and himself it appears he’s in some kind of purgatory for Lanterns. This issue reveals more of this side of things.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Get her number right jerk!

Though some of this issue focuses on the Green Lantern Corps and their recent kidnapping from Brainiac, the real thrust of the story focuses on Kyle Rayner teaming up with some exiled Guardians. Robert Venditti writes these scenes with purpose, infusing Kyle with the attitude we’ve come to expect while Hal drifts in some kind of Green Lantern afterlife. This is a side of the Lanterns I don’t think has been revealed, so if you’re a fan of this character you better check this out. Venditti doesn’t offer up too many answers, though he lays the groundwork for future reveals in this spectrum of the Green Lanterns.

The rest of the Green Lantern Corps get very little in the way of plot progression though Venditti has a big reveal for their fate to end the issue. The cliffhanger is intriguing and combines some classic villains well.

The art by Ed Benes delivers, especially with a full page splash of Hal later in the issue. The characters are detailed and their emotions are easy to read. I was getting flashbacks to John Romita Jr. at one point, in a good way, with Hal filling out well in the panel.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Kyle Rayner looks a bit unfinished in the art department in his scenes. I don’t know if it’s the glow on him or what, but he’s strangely lacking detail compared to other characters in the issue.

Generally this issue offers a major development we probably all expected which makes this issue a bit underwhelming. With double shipped books like this it’s hard not to notice the slower plots and this issue certainly drags out Hal’s adventure longer than it needed to be.

“He just kept giving me the dead eyed stare”

Is It Good?

Scenes that key into the Green Lantern mythos make this a great read for fans new and old. Venditti has a story on his hands here that cuts deep.
