Dragon Ball Super: Episode 10 “Show us, Goku! The Power of a Super Saiyan God” Review

We left off with Goku attaining the level of Super Saiyan God, but what does that mean?

Battle of Gods arc – Episode 10/14

Beerus and Goku waste no time before flying off to start their fight.

While they are getting started, Whis explains that Goku has attained the level of a true God, which is why Gohan can no longer feel his power anymore. I think they may be harping on this too much. It has been mentioned at least four times now since the beginning of the series. I know they want to reiterate it for the general public but can the viewing audience really be that dense? Perhaps here was the best explanation though. Many of the previous ones could have been cut in favor of this one.

We flash over to King Kai who is getting scolded by the elder Kais for letting Goku attain such power levels. Leaving us to wonder, what could happen from a confrontation between Goku and Beerus that could be that bad?

Well, back to the fight as they are still getting started.

After squaring off, Goku charges in. However, Goku’s extreme power increase has made controlling his body a little difficult.

Getting used to his new powers, Goku tries out a kamehameha, in a pretty visually awesome power up, complete with lightning. The resulting blast winds up giving the cruise ship a good shaking.

Piccolo warns them that they need to watch what they are doing or everything is going to be destroyed in their wake.

Goku makes a deal with Beerus. If he wins Beerus will spare Earth. Beerus agrees and states that there is no being in this universe stronger than himself. Interesting though, how they highlighted “this universe”, since we will soon be expanding to other universes in the coming saga arcs.

Despite the increase in strength though, Goku is still not able to land a single punch and ends up getting the stuffing knocked out of him, knocking him into the ocean.

Goku pulls himself out of the ocean getting ready for another round. Beerus and Goku head to the upper atmosphere/space to fight. To keep watching the fight, Burma flies most of the gang up in a spaceship while Vegeta just stands and stares from the ship.

During the battle Pilaf and gang reappear. Why? I don’t know, but for some reason Whis asks them to join him for some food. Ok. Whatever.

Meanwhile, the battle continues as Goku gets more accustomed to his powers, making him more and more Beerus’ “equal”. This involves a power up sequence with cool flames surrounding Goku. One of the best power ups of the arc, but since there haven’t been many, not really a hard hurdle to get over.

During the battle Goku manages to grapple Beerus, and repays him for the forehead flick and the neck chop from their earlier battle on King Kai’s planet. This shows that Goku still has his playful, if not revengeful side.

The episode ends with Beerus declaring that the preliminary tests are over and the real battle is set to begin.

Battle of Gods Movie Link

Battle of Gods to Super Time Correlation: ~1 hour 17 minutes to ~1 hour 20 minutes

The problem with trying to calibrate the fight scenes from the TV show to the movie is that they have a tendency to flow one into another.

That being said, I don’t think much, if any, of this fight is actually from the movie. I would say at most a minute or two of the show is. They pretty much go into full out brawl and don’t harp on the training period of the fight.

We will see after the next episode where they actually line up, since I know there are a few pivotal moments that should be easy to correlate.

Episode Thoughts and Feelings

As the start of this significantly drawn out fight sequence begins, I can honestly say that it wasn’t too bad. We do actually get some pretty visuals as Goku starts kamehameha and later in the episode as he powers up with all the fire surrounding him. That’s a new one. And I greatly enjoyed the “flick, flick” comment. I watched it twice for this review and laughed out loud each time.

But other than that, there just wasn’t very much “content” for the episode. I guess that is what one gets once we start getting into the fights: lots of fighting with little else to comment on.
