Action Comics #982 Review

Cyborg Superman’s plan comes ever closer to fruition as he’s acquired Zod in his little army of supervillains. Their plan? To kill Superman, of course. There’s some infighting though, and Cyborg Superman really needs to get Zod on board or they may never kill the traitor known as Superman.

Action Comics #982 Review
Action Comics #982
Writer: Dan Jurgens
Artist: Jack Herbert and Jose Luis
Publisher: DC Comics

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

“REVENGE” part four! General Zod takes command as he leads Cyborg Superman, Eradicator, Mongul, Blanque and Metallo against Superman—but his real motives are yet to be revealed and may have far graver consequences for Superman than anyone imagines.

Why does this book matter?

If you’re like me, you want these supervillains to start enacting the plan already. It’s been a long time in the making, but we’re almost there folks! Dan Jurgens has got many of the pieces at the ready to bring back some of those 90’s feels and with Jack Herbert and Jose Luis on pencils, it’s going to look sharp getting us there.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Action Comics #982 Review
For a general, this dude has no patience.

Given how slow the last issue was I was in a bit of shock halfway through this issue because so much happens. Much of the first half is Cyborg Superman reasoning with his now grumpy compatriots who are on the edge of disgruntled, but Jurgens makes Cyborg Superman quite convincing. He also does a good job giving every one of these villains a reason to want to follow Cyborg Superman and enact his plan. That gives each of these villains more of a purpose when entering the fight and thus gives the fight meaning.

The middle portion of this issue tackles Superman’s recent loss of sight. It’s a scary development that even his trusty robot in the Fortress of Solitude can’t figure out. These scenes add a human element to the comic and remind us Superman has more to fight for than ever. Lois and Jon join him at the Fortress and there are some interesting details as far as his sight troubles go. Oh, then the villains show up!

The last quarter of the book is the throwdown Cyborg Superman promised in the early pages. To say I was shocked this fight sequence takes place is an understatement. Usually, these fights are promised in the cliffhanger, but the comic keeps going! Add in the fact that Superman can’t see and the stakes are higher than ever (and he’s fighting villains he usually goes one on one with!). This all leads to a cliffhanger that’s exciting and a tad shocking given who shows up.

Use your head!

The art team does a heck of a job, with dynamic panel choices throughout that add to the drama. Take for instance two panels that occur after the reveal that the villains are at his door. In one panel we see Superman looking down with his eyes cast in shadow. He’s unsure how to proceed and he’s at a disadvantage. In the very next panel it’s looking up at him and he looks more resolved and ready. It’s a quick thing, but it adds to the heroic nature of what he’s about to do. The villains look really great too, and maniacally evil throughout the issue. The art as a whole is one win after another and it’s a highlight of this story arc.

It can’t be perfect can it?

I’m at a loss for finding fault in this issue. Obviously, if you haven’t been reading this series you’re going to be a tad lost, but Jurgens does a great job catching you up to speed when needed. It’s pretty much perfect.

Is It Good?

Action Comics #982 is a perfect issue that’s filled with great character work, tons of action, and a fast pace that keeps up to the very end. Action Comics is the primo heroic comic you need.

A lot of entertainment value, from the opening of Cyborg Superman reasoning with the villains, to Superman attempting to figure out his blindness, and then the throwdown to end the issue
Sharp art with great storytelling in the smallest of panels and big blockbuster action
If you haven't been reading this series the impact won't be as great for you
