Ever wanted to just cut loose and forget the world around you? How about doing that via a comic book? Image Comics has a new series that can be your option for that!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

Gwen and Rita are forced to pick up the pieces after Daphne’s brutal death. Josie moves into power with the Magic Socks, quickly becoming a pop cult sensation. This third issue is stuffed to the gills with an action-packed story, bonus art, soundtrack, and sketchbook! Pure fun! Pure flavor!

Why does this book matter?

Jim Mahfood is an incredibly unique artist with a style that’s filled with energy, brightness (colors by Justin Stewart) and an attitude that just doesn’t give a fuck. This series has been bonkers in a variety of ways with heavy drinking, drugs, and a graffiti style that’s intense. Suck it up to forget the day!

I love how the creature changes in this scene.

This issue progresses a few plots, the best being a TV show that lampoons the stupid self absorbed nature of social media and reality TV. Josie Sanchez is being interviewed on “Freak City Tonight” after she killed one of the Grrl Scouts and implores her fans to help her unlock the powers of the magic socks she stole. In this crazy scene, lingo is dropped, fans fawn over Josie, and some kind of officer even gives her the okay to kill some more. It’s quite insane, and reminded me of Transmetropolitan in its message and delivery. It’s also pretty damn funny. Mahfood utilizes a reserved Josie in between panels to enhance the insanity of what is being said quite well and it’ll get you to chuckle at the very least.

Outside of this, the remaining Grrl Scouts Gwen and Rita end up cutting loose and partying. They’re feeling a lot of pain with their fellow Scout being killed and their cutting loose is fun to watch. Graffiti is tagged, drinks are drunk, and mad sex and violence are partaken in. It’s a fun montage sequence and it looks great too.

The biggest surprise in this issue is the mystical and supernatural element, which serves to build the magic behind the magic socks. I can’t say Mahfood has any of it make sense, but it’s fun all the same and fleshes things out enough to make them feel like they matter. Plus, the issue ends with guns. Lots of guns.


The art is wicked!

It can’t be perfect can it?

This is the kind of book that imbues a sense of chaos in the best of ways, but may not deliver for some as far as character work and any believable story. When a friend of the Grrl Scouts is some kind of talking cat you know you’re in a whole new kind of world.

Is It Good?

Another excellent chapter in the sugar/drug/sex rush that is Grrl Scouts. This is a comic that should be best enjoyed with a reckless abandon that’s willing to accept the chaos that’s dropped on every page. This is a comic book adrenaline rush!
