It’s finally happening folks. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Obi-Wan Kenobi is finally getting his own standalone film in the quickly expanding Star Wars universe.
Sources tell the Hollywood Reporter that there’s no script yet and the project is at the earliest stage of development. Stephen Daldry the Oscar-nominated director behind The Hours and Billy Elliott is in talks to direct. The film will likely be an origin story, as with the Ron Howard directed Han Solo, which is still in filming after having lost its two previous directors.
At this time no actor has been selected for the role. Ewan McGregor is an obvious fan favorite and has mentioned previously that he’d be interested in reprising the role: “I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do it if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes.”
McGregor portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas’ prequel Star Wars films, Episodes I, II and III. Throughout the films he played the role of padawan learner, Jedi Knight, Jedi Master and most importantly, mentor and master to Anakin Skywalker who would later become the infamous Darth Vader.
