One of the more visceral horror comics of the year, Winnebago Graveyard, ends this week and we’re excited to see how Steve Niles and Alison Sampson wrap this thing up. The family has taken some loses, but so have the Satanists. Time to get some revenge!

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

The end is near. Christine fights to keep her family alive as Satanists attack.

Why does this matter?

Niles is a weathered horror writer and a buy-on-sight creator for most horror fans. Alison Sampson has a way of drawing incredibly unnerving imagery with a unique style that’s incredibly realistic, but also weird.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Winnebago Graveyard #4 Review
Cute family photo.

Some of the best horror films end with the heroes getting the upper hand and kicking some ass with gory delight. This issue is no different. Niles and Sampson showcase some gnarly gore, some excellent plot twists, and essentially allow the family to get a bit of revenge. They’ve lost the father, but dammit the mom and son are going to get out alive no matter how much they gotta smear blood on their winnebago. It’s a cinematic ending that allows Sampson to let loose.

Speaking of, Sampson does an excellent job with this issue, from realistic looking flames to some gross-out gore. Aimless gore and fire isn’t going to cut it for most though, and Sampson does well to capture the almost unfeeling nature of the family through facial expressions. They’ve seen a lot of shit over the last three issues and you can see it in their faces that they’re getting numb to it all. That adds a level of emotional impact on them and for the reader to pick up on. The Satanists continue to look like your basic suburbanites which adds a layer to their evil nature. If you see a dude in a black cloak sporting a Captain America t-shirt you wouldn’t necessarily think he wants to cut you open.

The colors by Stephane Paitreau add an important layer to the art particularly with the yellows and oranges in the fire and the reds in the gore. There’s an added layer of realism due to these colors.

Kids good with his hands.

It can’t be perfect can it?

My only gripe with this issue is the very last page, which shows a close up of the survivors who look shocked as if they’ve learned something amazing. The thing is, they should know what happened more or less. On top of that, nobody notices the blood smears on their winnebago? There was an opportunity to have the last image resonate with folks but instead it’s a tad confusing and off base.

Is It Good?

Winnebago Graveyard has been a consistently good horror comic with some of the most unnerving visuals to ever grace a comic book page. This issue serves as a great finale for those who love to see the heroes kick ass. A satisfying wrap up to a series well worth a look.
