When agents start getting knocked off one after the other at the start of a story you know we’re closing in on the end game. Andy Diggle and Luca Casalanguida are delivering a fast paced and action packed series so far as issue #5 drops this week.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

As NATO tears itself apart from within, 007 is declared Europe’s most wanted man. Hunted by SMERSH and the CIA, he must infiltrate a nuclear airbase to learn the secrets of Operation Hooded Falcon before Europe erupts into all-out war!

Why does this matter?

Last issue the CIA was basically taken out and now spies are dropping like flies. Bond is on the run (which is the best version of Bond let’s be honest) and now he needs to find the double agent who he once loved. It’s always complicated with this guy huh?

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

And the spies fall.

The Bond featured in this issue is the Daniel Craig version through and through. He’s tough as nails, suave as hell, and afraid of nothing. The issue opens with spies dying, so you’d think Bond would be as far away from the danger as possible. Not at all, as he brings himself closer to discuss his next move with M while the world falls down. Diggle does a great job with this scene as Bond and M discuss strategy and the stakes are made clear. It’s a perfect moment to pivot as the plot twists to Bond’s next move. This sequence involves a lot of action and a surprise or two.

This last action sequence is exciting as hell. Casalanguida choreographs this scene incredibly well utilizing a table in an exciting way. You’ll get a cinematic feel from this sequence and it’s very brutal. It’s rare you’ll be worried Bond is in danger, but they pull it off here. The opening page of spies being taken out is great too, done in four quick panels. Each panel flows into the next fluidly which enhances the tragedy. The bad guys are taking out these super spies with no trouble at all, which only enhances the danger Bond faces later.

Nice entrance.

It can’t be perfect can it?

Regardless of how good the comic is it’s still only two scenes more or less. It’s one of those comics you’ll finish and reflect on thinking, “That was good, but how much plot actually progressed?” No matter what this is going to be an excellent collected edition.

Is It Good?

James Bond: Kill Chain #5 is tense, action packed, and raises the stakes incredibly well. This is the kind of Bond action aficionados dream of.
