Avengers: Infinity War

‘Avengers: Infinity War’: The Infinity War is coming, so where are the Stones?

You’ve seen the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. You’ve seen Thanos. Now where are all these Infinity Stones he’s after. And what are their powers?

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War trailer has finally been released to the world and with it the internet has exploded with theory crafting, trailer breakdowns and sheer excitement. Since Thanos first appeared in the MCU through Marvel’s The Avengers, fans have suspected the Infinity Stones would play a major role in his involvement. As more and more Marvel films were released it became quickly apparent that the showrunners weren’t making any effort to hide the inevitable confrontation between Earth’s mightiest heroes and Thanos over the fate of Earth (duh) and the Infinity Stones.

With all the goosebump-inducing moments and juicy reveals the release of the Infinity War trailer has provided, the biggest has to be the Mad Titan himself wearing the Infinity Gauntlet with the Space and Power Stones equipped. We know the ultimate goal of Thanos is to possess all of the Infinity Stones, which is a terrifying prospect for the Avengers and the rest of the universe, as each Stone by itself possesses the power to destroy an entire planet. So where does each Stone currently reside? Let’s review what we know.

The Soul Stone

The mysterious orange Soul Stone is the only Infinity Stone that has yet to make an appearance and its powers are unknown. In the comics the Soul Stone possessed the ability to revert beings to their natural state and steal souls which in turn granted the wielder access to their memories and skills. Pretty scary stuff.

After watching the trailer I have a strong suspicion the Soul Stone has been on Earth all along in the hidden African kingdom of Wakanda, ruled by Avenger and King of Wakanda, Black Panther AKA T’Challa. During the trailer we see a number of scenes in Wakanda. T’Challa is seen issuing orders: “Evacuate the city, engage all defenses and get this man a shield,” after which Captain America steps out of the shadows (oh, the goosebumps). Iron Man is seen descending out of the sky with a Wakandan city in the backdrop. Last but certainly not least, Cap, Bucky, Falcon, Black Panther, Hulk and Black Widow are shown leading the Wakandan army in battle against Outriders, a powerful, insect/humanoid hybrid race that has served Thanos previously in the comics. Why would Thanos attack Wakanda if there wasn’t something there he wanted?

The Space Stone

The Space Stone provides mastery of space and the ability to create portals to seemingly any location you desire. It was first seen in Thor as the Tesseract, a cube that’s actually a protective case which allows mortals to handle the Stone within without blowing themselves up. Later while Loki was in the possession of this Stone in The Avengers, it allowed him to open a portal in space for the Chitauri fleet to invade Earth. In the Infinity War trailer we see Thanos with the Stone in his gauntlet as he materializes on Earth through a portal and we also see a bloodied Loki holding the Tesseract. With Thanos’ ship appearing at the end of Thor: Ragnarok, it’s safe to assume the subject may have come up between the two.

The Reality Stone

One down. Five to go.

The Reality Stone AKA the Aether has yet to have the full extent of its powers revealed. We know from Thor: The Dark World that it can possess a living being and in the wrong hands its immense powers can be used to plunge the universe into eternal darkness. After Thor defeated the Dark Elf Malekith, the Asgardians decided to turn the Aether over to the Collector as it was too dangerous to stay on Asgard given that they already had their hands full with the Space Stone. Due to a leak of Infinity War footage, it’s fair to assume Thanos ambushes the Collector in his safe house and tortures the Stone’s location out of him.

The Mind Stone

You may feel a slight pinch. Just relax!

The Mind Stone allows the bearer to control the minds of others. We first saw the stone in action in The Avengers, as Loki merrily pranced about brainwashing half of SHIELD with his staff, all the while having no idea that hidden inside was an Infinity Stone. As you can see from the shot above, we know Thanos will make an attempt at retrieving the Mind Stone from its current wielder, our favorite synthetic being, Vision. It’s likely that Corvus Glaive, the leader of Thanos’ hit squad the Black Order, is the one doing the extracting. Glaive’s wife, Proxima Midnight, another one of Thanos’ right hands, was seen in leaked images from Infinity War, so it’s safe to assume Corvus Glaive is a lock.

The Power Stone

You said it yourself, b---h.

Just incase you’re one of the maniacs out there who hasn’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet, I’ll go ahead and explain what the Power Stone does for you. The Power Stone is aptly named as it provides the bearer with unlimited stamina, energy and well, power. As seen in Guardians of the Galaxy , the Stone is so powerful that were a mortal to grasp it, they’d be utterly destroyed. Should you be one of the celestial beings with the ability to grasp this Infinity Stone, congratulations! The power to utterly destroy a planet simply by touching it is now in your grasp.

The last we saw of the Power Stone, Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord had turned it over to Nova Corps for safe keeping. As seen in the new trailer Thanos clearly has the Stone inserted into his gauntlet. We have to assume this is bad news for Nova Corps since it’s highly doubtful that they simply handed over the Stone on account of Thanos asking nicely. The one positive here is with the assumed destruction of Nova Corps we may just get Richard Rider, last of Nova Corps, Champion of Xandar and bane of Annihilus. Someone that I’d very much like to see introduced to the MCU.

The Time Stone

“Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain.” As the evil god of the dark dimension found out (the hard way), the Time Stone provides its wielder with the ability to manipulate the space-time continuum. Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme and guardian of the Earth is currently in possession of the Time Stone, though he knows it by another name: the Eye of Agamotto. The Eye is a mystical pendant locked safety away within the library of Kamar-Taj, quite safe from everyone… but a Mad Titan.

So there you have it folks. Six Stones, five of which we know about and each one with the power to threaten the entire universe. Oh and a Mad Titan is on his way to collect all of them so he can become the most powerful being in existence. Even for the Avengers, this may be a tall order.

Be sure to check back with AiPT! as we’ll be providing you with the latest and greatest Infinity War news as the countdown to release day continues.
