Nintendo Switch Passes Wii U Lifetime Sales in Japan

Nintendo can’t stop breaking records.

Within the last week Nintendo reached two impressive milestones – overtaking the PS2’s first-year sales record in Japan and then the Switch became the fastest selling console in U.S. history. Well they aren’t done yet folks, Nintendo has broken their own record this time with the Switch passing the Wii U’s lifetime sales record in Japan.

Nintendo Switch Passes Wii U Lifetime Sales in Japan

To put this into perspective for you, the Wii U sold 3.3 million units over the course of five years (December 2012-17) in Japan. By comparison the Switch has sold the same number of units in a measly 10 months. They beat out their previous console’s sales record in less than a year. That’s pretty crazy especially given how difficult it was to even find a Switch over the first several months of it’s release.

Nintendo’s hit console is showing no signs of slowing down either. Their game library has vastly improved since the Switch’s release, with the utterly fantastic new Mario title, Super Mario Odyssey giving them a big boost. Nintendo will be building upon their already solid foundation with games like Yoshi, Bayonetta 2, Super Meat Boy and Kirby coming later this year.

Be sure to check back for more gaming news as Nintendo is sure to breaking more records.
