Alex Milne returns to art duties as too many bots and not enough space leads to humor, hi-jinks and drama.

The first twelve months of Lost Light have been interesting. Under the new name the series has travelled to a parallel universe, introduced new characters, changed the status quo, given us a look at the bigger picture and answered a lot of questions about what happened to the Lost Light. After three months of following Getaway and the mutineers we now get back to the core roster and see what’s happening with Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, Cyclonus and the rest.

Just like ship that serves as the setting for most of this issue, the story is packed with lots of things going on. As has become a trademark of Lost Light and its predecessor, More Than Meets the Eye (MTMTE), this issue balances action, comedy, character work and drama. There are multiple stories running throughout the issue, the one with the most pages being an escalating tit for tat prank war between Swerve and Anode. While I enjoy the humor, Anode continues to feel quite similar to existing characters (like Swerve) as James Roberts has yet to really make me care about her when he already has such a large cast of likeable and interesting characters.

Speaking of the large cast, many of them get chances to shine, even if it’s in the background. It really plays into the sense of claustrophobia and makes this issue stand out. The other standout this issue is Cyclonus, as you see how he deals with the fallout of his relationship with Tailgate. One of my favorite elements in Lost Light has been the development of Cyclonus and Whirl and this episode continues that. The issue ends with a shocking development and I’m a little disappointed that the solicitations for the next issue suggest that we are leaving this story and moving on to the Scavengers. As good as Lost Light has been, it has suffered a little from jumping about so much and I feel that it would have been nice to stick with the main cast for more than one issue before moving on to another part of the puzzle.

While a lot of what I love about MTMTE and Lost Light comes from James Robert’s mix of humor and character work, the art has always been strong. This issue sees regular MTMTE artist Alex Milne make his Lost Light debut. While Jack Lawrence’s style has grown on me over the last year, it’s good to see Milne back drawing Team Rodimus.  He may be my favorite Transformers artist due to his grasp of how to express the characters through their body language. In particular, Milne’s ability to convey emotions and facial expressions in transformers will always astound me, especially the way he draws Whirl. The only criticism that I have on the art would be that some of the scenes are very crowded, but that is down to the structure of the story as I feel that there is a little too much going on at times.

All in all, this was a good issue that balanced the humor and drama in a way that channels the book at its best. This was helped in part by the return of Alex Milne. Oddly enough, all my criticisms are ones that have been a factor throughout Lost Light. Namely, Anode not fully connecting as a character and the story jumping about too much and not letting us stay with the core cast before moving on to another part of the big picture.
