Doom Patrol #10 Review

Something weird is going on… But it’s Doom Patrol #10! Of course its going to be weird, silly! And just like the issue itself, this review is delayed!

Doom Patrol #10 takes crazy, dials it to 11, decides 11 isn’t high enough and makes up its own number. Despite being two months since the previous issue, Gerard Way continues the momentum in DC’s wackiest title, with amazing art as usual by Nick Derrington.

Listen to the latest episode of our weekly comics podcast!

So what’s it about?

The official summary reads:

The world is going haywire, and it’s up to the Doom Patrol to save it from going to S#!%. Weird things continue to happen that only the Chief can (attempt to) explain. Plus, tap dancing, and secret origins revealed!

Doom Patrol #10 Review

Mister Nobody definitely has a voice like a 1950s movie.

Tell me about it.

So, last issue of Doom Patrol was strange, right? Well, this one takes it a little bit further. You know $#!+? The not so subtle joke about people stuffing their mouths with “shit food”? That seemingly throwaway background gag is a plot point. With the simple trigger of tap dancing by Terry None, daughter of Mister Nobody, it causes everyone to mutate into… well, I don’t know how to describe it. And Terry’s new strange bodysuit? It’s constantly changing patterns. The world is going tipsy turvy upside down crazy like straight out of the imagination of Grant Morrison, which is a given since Gerard Way is pretty much Morrison’s protege. Honestly, I felt like I was on some kind of drug while reading it, but that’s usually a given for a Doom Patrol comic.

Doom Patrol #10 Review

The Doom Patrol have their big showdown with the Brotherhood of Nada inside of a shopping mall while Casey goes to the roof to speak with Terry who had romantically fallen out through the hole in the wall in her apartment earlier that day (and in the previous issue!) while they made out together and had previously been her roommate. Suddenly Terry is nine months pregnant! No, I’m not making this up. I did say it feels like a drug trip. Casey rushes off in Danny the Living Ambulance with Terry in the back while the Doom Patrol chase on bicycles, except for Flex Mentallo -THE HERO OF THE BEACH- who is on foot due to a healthy fear of bicycles? Don’t ask and just roll with it. The Brotherhood of Nada chase in their car. Suddenly there’s a crash and the walls of reality break as the Doom Patrol land in RetConn.

Every issue of Doom Patrol makes me wonder what’s going on and this one is no exception. But that’s good! Doom Patrol is THE title that should be doing that.

The art by Nick Derington is fantastic as always and fits with the weird and wonderful theme that is always going on. There isn’t really any other artist that would fit on this book. His style perfectly complements the weird and wonderful tone of the book.

Doom Patrol #10
Is it good?
The weird and the wonderful kick into high gear in this issue and there is no other way it should be.
Weird and wonderful come to a head this issue thanks to brilliant writing by Gerard Way.
Derington's art style continues to be the books perfect fit.
While the content of the issue is fantastic, the delays between issues... not so much
9.5
Great
