Rick and Morty season 3 was a delight, especially after the wait we had to endure to get it. Luckily Oni Press has been filling in for the show with solid comics. This week, Oni is releasing a new series highlighting different characters in the Rick and Morty universe. The first involves the Vindicators, the superheroes of the Rick and Morty universe!

Didn’t most of these guys die already?

If you’ve been reading Marvel Comics in the last 5 or so years you will delight in the jokes and ribbing this comic does in regards to reboots, events, and rebirths. Writer J. Torres is very aware of how ridiculous superhero comics are and makes fun of the convoluted, cliche, and trope heavy storylines. More than once this comic takes a direct shot at Marvel (like the “All-New All-Different” approach) and it’s fun to see all the inside jokes if you’re a comic fan. The truth is this comic is not wrong in ridiculing the ridiculous nature of modern comic book storytelling which gives the humor an ample amount of purpose. It’s fitting too as the story takes a direct shot at the Infinity Gauntlet (in this case, it’s the Infinity Balls) which in only a few short weeks will be in the know with everyone due to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Cameos are the name of the game in this issue which is going to please hardcore and even casual fans. Characters like Pickle Rick show up, as well as the Mad Max style villains and other fan favorites. While the show itself is usually pushing sci-fi stories and getting trippy about it this issue revels in the characters which gives it a different, but equally enjoyable spin.

The art by CJ Cannon is fantastic, delivering a likeness to the show most will appreciate. The gore isn’t held back too much which allows those gross out gags to land well. There are a few layouts that use the same background in a clever way, allowing for a progression that uses time well and makes the Freddy Krueger character introduction funny in a subtle way.

Nice space-boob shot.

It can’t be perfect can it?

One could argue the Vindicators don’t get to do all that much. Maybe that’s similar to their appearance in the show–they were awful at being heroes–but a lot of their character quirks and powers are underused. Million Ants and his relationship with Supernova, for instance, isn’t touched upon at all.

Is It Good?

Dare I say this is even better than the main Rick and Morty series due to its unabashed cameos and packed story? I imagine some folks will be put off by the $5 price tag, but it’s actually so dense with laughs, cameos, and story you’ll hardly notice. I haven’t been this excited for a comedy comic series in a long time. Bring on issue #2!

Is it good?
A must read for Rick and Morty die-hards and even casual fans too.
Tons of cameos!
Hilariously pokes fun at Marvel and the convoluted (and cliched) nature of comics
CJ Cannon can do no wrong!
The Vindicators use their powers, but sparingly, and their character dynamics and dramas seem to be put on hold for this adventure
9.5
Great
