Judging by the Cover – 4/4/18 new releases

David and Eric share their favorite covers from the weeks’ new comics.

Most comic book fans have a pretty good idea of what they’re going to buy every week when they visit their local comic shop. With that said, there’s still a lot of fun to be had just glancing at the week’s new releases and taking a chance on a book that looks promising. That’s where covers come in-a fantastic image can make the difference between trying something new or saying, “Nah, not this week.”

In that spirit, here are the covers that captured Toys Editor David Hildebrand and Manga Editor Eric Cline’s attention this week.

David’s Picks:

Batman #44
Cover A art by Mikel Janin
Cover B art by Joëlle Jones

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releases

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesI am a few issues behind on Batman, but by the looks of this cover, I think Batman and Catwoman’s big day is almost here! I like this cover because it is simple. Bruce Wayne looking at himself in the mirror and his reflection is Batman. The two personalities that he has juggled over the years. And he finally has found love and it is with a woman that understands him, and he doesn’t have to hide who he is. I really try my best not to chase variants, but the variant cover of this issue is Selina looking into her mirror with Catwoman looking back. Two awesome covers for sure!

Red Sonja #14
Art by Jonboy Meyers

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesThis cover is absolutely gorgeous! Red Sonja looks like she just concluded one hell of a battle. Her bloodied sword resting on her shoulder. Her shield also bloodied with arrows buried into it. But she stands proudly like she just handed an entire army their asses. I dig her outfit and the sculpt of her body. She’s been hitting the gym. The colors are just as gorgeous and this cover deserves to be a T-shirt!

Super Mansion #1
Art by Jake Elphick

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesSo if you are like me and need little to zero sleep at night, and dig late-night cartoons, then maybe you have seen Super Mansion. Late at night, I think I find most anything amusing and Super Mansion has a cat named Cooch. I know you laughed, don’t lie. So, they are now making their debut in comic form. The cover will catch your eye because they aren’t your normal everyday superheroes. The League of Freedom is led by the aging superhero Titanium Rex, and his fellow superheroes Black Saturn, American Ranger, Jewbot/Robobot, Cooch, and Brad. It’s a show you have to see for yourself and I’m sure the comic will be just as entertaining.

Eric’s Picks:

Mech Cadet Yu #8
Art by Takeshi Miyazawa

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesThis is the first cover in the series to focus primarily on Skip Tanaka, and I dig it. Takeshi Miyazawa always does a great job with characters’ facial expressions, and this is no exception. His smirk and relaxed pose while sitting atop the bloody Sharg is great. It’s the crumpled aluminum cans that add the extra nice touch for me.

Star Wars #46
Art by David Marquez

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesC-3P0 with a silly gait and a pair of fish heads. Could I ask for anything more? David Marquez delivers a great comedic cover here. The composition is really good, too.

Rogue & Gambit #4
Art by Kris Anka

Judging by the Cover - 4/4/18 new releasesI’ve been a Kris Anka fan ever since his Star-Lord run because of work like this. It’s just fun–the energy coming right at the reader is great, as is Remy’s expression. Both characters look great in each other’s costumes.
