In the wake of Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp just became very important

Ant-Man and The Wasp was expected to be a fun placeholder until next year’s Marvel Cinematic Universe releases. But after Avengers: Infinity War, it looks like it’ll be a whole lot more.

Warning: Spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War ahead.

When 2018 started, there were three movies set to be released by Marvel Studios. Black Panther and Infinity War have both been released and are satisfying their lofty expectations. The third, Ant-Man and The Wasp was expected to be a fun placeholder until next year’s Marvel Cinematic Universe releases. However, after the events of Infinity War it became a hell of lot more important.

Spoilers Ahead

The end of Infinity War is unprecedented. With one snap of his fingers, Thanos kills half of the universe and fan favorite characters such as Spider-Man and Black Panther are seemingly no longer part of the MCU. Basically, the good guys decisively lose.

It is explained in Infinity War that Ant-Man has allowed himself to be placed under house arrest in order to protect his family. It was established in Ant-Man how much the titular hero loves his daughter and also makes sense why the Avengers would respect his decision. Since Ant-Man is not in the movie we do not see how he is affected by Thanos at the end. So why does Ant-Man and The Wasp mean more now?

In the wake of Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp just became very important

As interesting as it would be to see how the world and its remaining superheroes are dealing with the aftermath of Infinity War, it has already been confirmed that Ant-Man and the Wasp will take place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. What we may be getting instead is some idea as to how Earth’s Mightiest Heroes can defeat Thanos.

A big part of the original Ant-Man was the Quantum Realm, which we learn is a subatomic world in which time does not exist. We also know that Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, is trapped there after removing the regulator that controlled her shrinking power. How does this play into Avengers 4?

In the wake of Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and The Wasp just became very important

We know very little about the Quantum Realm. Originally, Hank Pym thought it was impossible to return from the microverse. Scott Lang then proved that it could be done, leading Pym to believe that Janet is still alive. If and when she does return, will she have information that can help in the battle against the Mad Titan?

The complete timeframe for Ant-Man and The Wasp has not been disclosed and it does not seem out of the question for the movie to continue up to the fateful finger snap. Will the loss of his family be the catalyst that causes Ant-Man to join the battle against Thanos or will the movie be bookended by present day scenes?

Another Avenger was missing from Infinity War. Hawkeye was unable to join his fellow Avengers for the same reason as his diminutive teammate. Is it possible that Ant-Man and The Wasp will give further insight into Clint Barton? The post credits scene in Infinity War also introduced Captain Marvel. Will the next entry in the MCU further expand on what may be Earth’s last hope?

Ant-Man and The Wasp seemed like it was going to be an entertaining if unimportant entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sandwiched between Infinity War and Captain Marvel it seemed like an opportunity for the audience to catch their collective breaths. It seems impossible for Ant-Man and the Wasp to not tie into Infinity War and it will be interesting to see how.
