The hunt for Wolverine kicked off last week — and it’s a funny play on the character since he’s the one usually doing the hunting. Out today, Daredevil is hunting down Wolverine and in this first issue, he seeks help from some surprise heroes. You’ll never guess who they are, unless of course you’ve been reading Charles Soule for the last few years.

So what’s it about?

Read our preview.

Why does this matter?

This is a dark detective style story so come into this one if you like slow boil character work and uncovering of clues. This issue also ties into the weekly Wolverine appearances over the last two months.

Fine, you have my attention. What’s good about it?

Hunt for Wolverine: Weapon Lost #1 Review

Definitely no fear. It checks out.

This issue shows Soule knows how to take his time. It opens with Daredevil captioning as he dives through the skyline of New York. Soon we’re being introduced to a mysterious character before we even see him which gives us Daredevil’s point of view on an Inhuman character. From there these two heroes seek another character, effectively banding together as a mini-team to combine their skills on their hunt for the man they know as Logan. This leads them down yet another seedy and dark path which includes a classic X-Men character.

There’s a clever bit about the internet that is woven into the final character introduced that actually makes some sense. Throughout this issue Soule does well to capture a little wrinkle of a character or their surroundings giving the entire experience a realistic tone.

Besides Daredevil’s incredible powers, this issue is very much grounded in reality which starts with Matteo Buffagni’s art. There’s a great use of shadows to give the city and interior scenes a noir feel. Jim Charalampidis infuses the right amount of color into these scenes to remind us New York is a city that never sleeps. There’s no doubt this story will delve into mobster hideouts and other locations where criminal filth reside, which puts a very clear perspective on this story.

Flying motorcycles…only in NYC.

It can’t be perfect can it?

The preview unfortunately gives away more details than even this issue offers. In fact, it gives us every character who pops into the story too and that’s a nice reminder not a lot happens in this issue. It introduces Misty and Frank in a coherent and interesting way, but if you’re expecting a good lead on finding Wolverine you’re going to have to come back for issue #2. Patient readers won’t mind, even the patient ones like me have to admit they’d like a little more for their buck (and cliffhanger).

Is It Good?

A slow boil first issue that is the good start to a great detective story. Weapon Lost has all the makings of a gritty and great noir story.

Is it good?
I'm thoroughly enjoying the slow boil story, but some might find the pace too slow.
Well told and paced issue (albeit it's a slow burn)
Drawn beautifully with noir sensibitilities
Clever hook between a mutant power and the internet
The synopsis actually has more details than the issue itself
Cliffhanger leaves you wanting
8.5
Great
